Curious to know who is using oval rings on their mtb bikes and would you recommend them. I am in the process of converting to 1x11 and not sure whether to go round or try oval right out of the gate.

been using obsolete black for around 5 months and very happy no issues at all

When clearing an obstacle on a MTB your pedals should be in a horizontal position and the oval chain ring would also be at it narrowest, so will not be an issue.

That would not make sence - on the downstroke you have more power - thus using the 'greater' diameter / wider portion of the chainring...

So with pedals horisontal - ring will be at it's widest

OK so I just checked my oval chainring and we are both wrong.  The chainring is at it's widest at just past the 4 0'clock position, so horizontal i.e 3 O'clock it is not at it's narrowest but not at it's widest either, probably about the same width as a standard chainring.
