How is your planning and training going? I know it is still early days but I have started base training last week.

Not great, actually. Broke my wrist in a fall a couple of weeks ago and will only be back on the bike in May. I'm not panicking yet though. Still lot's of time ..

Hope it heals well.

Thanks! That's the worry. What do miles of corrugations do to a recently broken wrist? Luckily not a complex fracture. No surgery or anything, just a cast.

Anyone willing to reveal their training prep for The Munga i.e. distance, duration, quantity? I sort of like got a plan to prepare for it but would like something to compare it to :)

From my side, nothing very scientific. Planning on short, hard rides during the week. LSD over weekends. Also planning 4 race simulation weekends about a month apart ...

Just started with a long base period with rides up to 12 hours max towards the end (just 2). Then 8 weeks of Polarised training to increase power and back to 8 weeks long rides similar to Munga "stages". Two weeks taper thereafter.

That is the plan. But family, business or life in general may scupper some of my good intentions . . .

So what would a race simulation weekend be? Two back to back 200km rides?

Yes, something like that ... but more. I'm thinking of perhaps catching a greyhound bus to Polokwane (or wherever) and simply riding back home via backroads, catnapping when needed. Testing gear and systems and getting some sleep deprivation experience. Also, Durban Dash Up in September will be on the cards.

Right chaps and chapettes, time to get serious.

The toe has healed (well sort of). But managed some time on the IDT today, all of 25 minutes of slow slow riding.

Let the training begin.

This will be the diary - as promised.

Have just entered he Munga.

Looking for someone to possibly start training with.

I ride every weekend both MTB and Road however will now have to start doing a lot more MTB training.

Just to advise that I am not a youngster but have the drive to complete and finish this, as I am doing it as a personal challenge as well as to raise money for charity

Well training got a bit serious - took the weekend off, had to much work to do.

This week am planning to do 25 min easy riding sessions - build it up to riding for 30 min easy. Hopefully then look to being able to build up to 30 min harder riding on the IDT.

Also started the gym thing on Tuesday and Thursday. Just do a quick circuit, but include extra core and spend 10 - 15 min stretching. Max time I spend in the gym is 1hr.

Hey Wadem - welcome to the challenge!

Sitting behind my keyboard, the Munga sounds so romantic - man and machine against the elements. Mind over matter, knocking the kilometres off one by one, riding bikes and forgetting about the rest of the world.

Reality hits when, after completing a long ride (and I've done a few this year), I've been more than happy to get off my bike and not look at it again for a while. How much more hardcore do you have to be to take on the Munga? How strong do you have to be mentally?

Hats off to all those just considering doing it.
