Less fuel

I took 4 bikes down to kzn recently, 2 on the Aluminium canopy roof laying down and 2 on the bike carrier, it's a Hilux 3 litre D4D. Loaded with camping stuff, food etc for 4 people for a week. I got the same fuel consumption that I usually get when travelling long distance loaded with tools and equipment. About 10l per 100km.

So coming back to your question, I doubt there will be much difference between a bike carrier and canopy :)

What will be the best?

1. 5 bikes on a bike rack behind my double cab bakkie.

2. Or 'fold them up' into a small Challenger trailer.

Less fuel?

I see 2 problems:

1. You cannot get 5 bikes into a small trailer

2. If you disassemble and you manage it, you will have to pack them really carefully as the trailer movement is exaggerated and they get shaken around badly

I would put them upright on bike racks on top of the trailer lid.

Fuel consumption shouldn't be much above normal, perhaps 5 or 10 %?

I found if you reduce your speed slightly...you improve your consumption.

we did a few experiments while driving to JHB the other day...I like to travel at 120-xxx km...i normally get an idea of the traffic flow then pick a speed turn on the cruise control...otherwise you are on the brake all the time...however by reducing my speed to 115 km i reduced the avg consumption...the only problem is you feel like it is gona take forever to reach your destination...the only problem with this is the amount of traffic you will experience during the festive season...it will be difficult to travel at a constant speed there are too many roadies driving cars during this period ;)

just beware of all the speed traps...especially the areas were the limit reduces from 120 down to 80 km...and the avg speed cameras.

only one way...  sponge over the tail gate and hang the front wheels over the flap.  it'll always be less fuel to than to carry a trailer.

if you need space to pack the rest of the stuff, consider the trailer for the rest.
