My worst #unclippedthewrongfootfall happened when I stopped to take a picture of a berg adder, and then turned to the left to leave. it was my left foot that was still clipped in, which threw me off balance, and deposited me flat on my back...right beside the snake I had just photographed....

Damn!!

I bet you unclipped and got up in record time after hitting the ground though ;) :P

That's putting it very mildly

Somewhat. I had suffered a string of wipe outs on that day, from slipping in a pool being refilled, banging my head something crazy on the bottom, to having the moment with the snake. This all while nursing a cracked rib and badly sprained wrist after coming second best on a double jump at Contermanskloof a few days earlier. You have these days, learn from them, and up your skill set. Don't fear days like this, embrace them rather, except for the snake. Don't embrace a snake... :excl:

You bet. I was in much pain by that stage, but adrenaline took over for sure. The funny thing is though that the snake made an even hastier retreat. It skrikked itself dizzy. It was quite funny to be honest.

Here is evidence of the critter in question...

Sounds to me like if you didn't have bad luck, you'd have no luck at all! ;)

I know the feeling - I did exactly that a few weeks back on my road bike.

Stopped at a traffic light and just somehow forgot that my right shoe was clipped in and went down - mostly just my pride that got hurt at least...

And that right there is why you should never ever stop or attempt a trackstand next to a large truck at a traffic light.

If you topple over anywhere near the truck wheels just as the light goes green you can imagine what will happen next.

Savoury pancakes, anyone? ;)

Jokes aside though, that is something I am extremely nervous about - I am still just hiding out doing multiple loops in my suburb, where it's nice and quiet and you don't encounter any cars. The day I venture out on to busier roads is going to be a scary one

Apparently if was from a store called Birthdays. Presume you have some down in Cape Town, since I've seen quite a few up here in Gauteng.

Shot dude! According to Google there's three of 'em in the Cape. The lekker thing is that my contract ends a few day's prior to my birthday, so a cycling mug will make a nice gift to self.

Definitely not trying to put you off, but, you're right, the road is a scary place sometimes.

A lot of people just don't give a damn about cyclists.

Having said that, I've hurt myself many more times (and much worse) on my mountain bike.

Yeah, I gathered as much, so my plan is to stick to the quieter routes super early in the mornings to avoid the traffic!

Although having said that, the fitness community in PE is HUGE, and there are a bazillion cyclists, so I think there may be more understanding as many drivers may be cyclists.

We also have a couple of areas that EVERYONE cycles in on the weekends; they are awesome as the roads are super wide, and people tend to avoid driving there over that time, so you're far safer :) plus the routes all start and end at the most amazing coffee shop/restaurant that serves the best breakfast you'll ever eat in your life, so it's a good excuse to head out there ;)

You better go work for the Department of Tourism, or at the very least you should name the place in the hope of a free breakfast for your recommendation ;)

Seeing that I travel to PE regularly can you point me in the direction of this coffee shop please? I am seriously considering renting a bike on my next trip and doing a nice loop through PE.

Hahaha again with the Department of Tourism... Maybe I should apply ;)

It's called Grass Roof Cafe, out in the Sardinia Bay area - https://goo.gl/maps/pviJ628mQyG2

Try their pancakes with bacon & maple syrup - your tastebuds will thank you!

That's how I roll

Maybe I should start charging a finders fee

Start a food/restaurant review site with a section on cycling friendly places along with the best things on the menu ;)
