To move forward:

A friend has asked me about lights. I told him to avoid Topeak

(no surprise there), but what do Hubbers recommend?

Sigma seems to be a good choice. Any others?

Also I see guys stating LEDs are good. From what I see they are

still not up to the light levels of HID, but are more robust and

last longer.

I also got the Sigma Powerled Black and very happy after three night rides. Very neat and light system as well.

I know its not up to the standard set by the Lupine etc, but I prefer to spend the extra cash on the bike itself!

The Lupine Betty is a very nice and super bright light, but not many of us can justify the US$995 price tag! smiley18.gif

I like DIY and have done several versions over the past 5 years. Now busy with another set, this time using LEDs.

there are 2 sides to every story .Jeremy likes to string things out a bit' date='get topteaks response[/quote']

Very true, but my point is that I purchased an expensive light that stopped

working after 4 months of use and they did not accomodate me (read the

comment about what the Sigma guys are prepared to do for their customers).

I have told two people now to steer clear of Topeak.

Is that good business? Sometimes I have to look after my customers a little

more so they have a "good experience" of me. It costs more to lose a

customer than to keep one...

I could pontificate for hours.

Some people like Topeak, but I have been burnt (figuratively) and don't...

Jeremy, why dont you have a look at the Sigma that Justin (Zaskar) is using on one of the ICG rides ? It seems to give off a nice light but how robust it is, he'll have to answer.

Sorrie but I cannot agree with the comments re Topeak lights.

I have had the Moonshine for 3 years and not had one problem.

I broke the handlebar lamp holder clip through my own clumsiness.Still works fine though.

The light gets a leetle hot but thats no problem in winter.

Brilliant beam and reasonable duration.

Has also a helmet clamp which is cool for caving as well.

I also have the road lights on my road bike and totally satsfied.

Planning to buy another battery or 2 so I can have plenty of juice.

In fact who wants to sell their battery pack seeing you dont like them anymore.

Hey - I'm not against the Topeak - the unit is fantastic when it works as it now does

after I paid for agents' mistake. I also broke my mount and now store the battery in a

tribag. No big issue there.

The issue I have is the attitude of the agents.

To give a contrasting example: I bought one of the first Garmin Edge 305s.

One day the mount snapped, it went tumbling across the road and got ridden over by a

truck. From then on it would switch off when I hit a particular type of bump. I took it to

the agents and told them what had happened - you couldn't miss the scratches even

if I had tried to BS them. No problem they said, it was a known manufacturing

problem (something to do with a battery connector), no matter what had happened

to the unit. They swapped it out for a brand new unit.

Will I buy another Garmin? Yep - I'm now the proud owner of a 705.

Will I recommend Garmin? Yep - ask my mates.

Will I buy or recommend Topeak? Nope.

BTW, I have a carbon mini-pump from Topeak that is incredible! Get' em while they're

hot!!!

Zaskar has the Sigma Karma same as me... seems pretty robust.... i attached the battery pack "skeef" during the 24hr and knocked it llose - rode the single-track section with it hanging down and bumping against the wheel and it's still fine. i also dropped mine already (i use it during load shedding around the house) and it's still working...
