Barry Stuart Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Try this...https://www.kikko.co.za/That's the suggestion I was looking for too. Looks like a good option for people with adventurous kids.

SeanBW Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 We have a 9 year old son that enjoys MTB and all the mountain tracks around Worcester. I can't ride with him every time and would like to know what device is available to track him while he rides. I cellphone will not work every time due to the mountains and bad coverage and we are scared to buy a GPS watch that can be stolen easily if he is confronted by someone. I was thinking of a device that can be clipped on his rider gear, maybe with a SOS button in case of emergency. Any people out there maybe with a solution or suggestion we can investigate? Best product is called SPOT Gen3 which you can get from a list of retailers listed on. http://africa.findmespot.com/en/ its 100% satellite technology and does not need any GSM or RF environment to work and send notification. It give you complete piece of mind, as you will be able to track his location LIVE through a simple app on any smart phone. He has the ability to also send you SMS messages when completely off the grid.
SeanBW Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Hi Johan Welcome... Unfortunately as far as I understand it most devices will be reliant on a cell signal to be able to send their location to you. Not even a gps watch will work as it doesnt have a sim card and in turn no way of sending out a signal/location. Unless you are looking to spend mega bucks on some form a satellite communications device I think your only option will be a phone of sorts. There are many apps that you are able to track with (posted many time before in this forum) and some even have the SOS functions of a button to push should something happen and it will send an alert with a location. One such app even has an automated system, so if the device is stationery for more that a predetermined time an alarm will sound, if the user does not respond to the alarm then the SOS is sent. A nice function... Probably not what you wanted to hear, but hope it helps. Check out http://africa.findmespot.com/en/ .. does not need GSM and is 100% satellite technology, with an APP, and the ability to send simple check in messages to let people know your OK and also the ability to send a SOS notification.
Raydek Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Check out http://africa.findmespot.com/en/ .. does not need GSM and is 100% satellite technology, with an APP, and the ability to send simple check in messages to let people know your OK and also the ability to send a SOS notification. Thanks thanks for the info. Have actually been looking into this a bit more recently and have found some devices that are pretty cheap very similar to the findmespot one as well as ones that do you have sim cards for continuous tracking off www.dx.com (chinese deals website). Awesome that they are available!

Awesome that they are available!Sure .. but those sort of products are totally dependent on cell coverage, so when your off the grid with NO cell coverage it's going to be pretty useless in tracking you, or being able to notify someone in case of an emergency (HELP/SOS)! I dont know of any product other than SPOT/TRACE that works in this region (Africa) that is totally 100% Satellite technology, and will work pretty much everywhere.
Oakley360 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I own a SPOt gen 3 and use it all over the world, mostly for paragliding into the unknown. Best device availible that does what you need to do- the is 1 better option called the delorm tracker(also satelite based but double the price and double the subscription of spot). The spot is about R1500 for the device and a subscriptio is needed(ps I always buythe extra $20 package for hellicopter rescue) If anyone in Capetown area want to test the device for their needs they can ask to borrow and test with my device if they want to... The only cheaper alternative is called a PLB or PBIRP, but it doesnt leave a breadcrumb trail to follow if needed.
Ryno_Griesel Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I first got introduced to the SPOT tracking devices, specifically the GEN3 when doing Adventure Racing overseas a couple of years ago. We had to activate the SOS button in SPAIN an it worked well. The SPOT products are available in Africa since last year and works very well off the Grid. I use it during my Drakensberg trips and people can follow me online or on the APP - check out: http://africa.findmespot.com/en/ and http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0MjqmlCqMkxWBYi13D13E2uv2KZVbhveL
