Hi everyone, my sons Scott scale 940 was recently stolen. Due to the poor Rand the insurance has replaced it with a Scott scale 950. My son in complaning that it is a lot heavier. What components will be the most economical to change if we start to upgrade? Trying to shed some weight. Thanx Johan

Sorry to hear about the insurance payout but that's a reminder to us check our policies and ensure we are insured correctly.

Without doubt a set of tubeless wheels. Good luck.

Both the 940 & 950 are alluminium frames and component specs don't differ much, so the difference shouldn't be that big, maybe 500g. What year model was the 940? Is the 950 a 2016 model? The main difference between the two is most likely the wheels.

What tires was he using before and what tires is he using now? Is he running tubless? Tires with thicker sidewalls can add up to 200g each.

Other than tires, the a whole new wheelset is going to make the biggest difference, but unfortunately also one of the more pricey upgrades but it's worth it.

Thanx, we have done the tubeless upgrade. ( was done on other as well). Both bikes have the Scott syncross rims. Will check if it is the same model no. The scale 940 was a 2014 model and the 950 is a 2015 with internal cable routing. The bigest diference that I can see is the crank that was xt on the 940 and the 950 is only Shimano.

I have the 2014 Scott scale 940 which (I think) has the same wheels and Fork as the 2015 950. The only difference is the better components (brakes and drivetrain) on the 940, which wont weight much. So in all honesty I don't think there will be a big weight difference, but it is definitely less bike than the 940 due to the lower budget components.

That said, if you want to drop a lot of weight from the bike, get better wheels. I got Hope hubs with stans rims and dropped about 1kg from the bike. Those Syncros wheels are pretty heavy IMO. You could lose more weight by upgrading the fork too, but there is nothing wrong with the stock one. Money would be better spent upgrading the components once the originals fail.

So I did some research on the 2014 Scale 940 vs the 2015 Scale 950:

-Each of the Maxxis Ikon's on the new bike weigh 120g more than the Schwalbe Rocket Ron's on the old bike.

-Although the rims are both by the same brand, they are different models. The Syncros XC on the old bike may have been slightly lighter than the Syncros GX19 on the new bike.

-DT swiss spokes vs unbranded spokes.

-Lastly the bikes have different model Formula front hubs.

This all probably adds up to around 300g of additional rotating weight which would feel most noticable. A decent wheelset and tyres might save around 900g which will make the bike feel much lighter than even the old 940 was, and stiffer at the same time.

the crank is probably good for 100g max... to XT and to XTR 160g... not massive

Get lighter wheels...

And if you really want to drop some grams. get a light carbon seatpost, stem and handlebar with some ESI grips.

by now you have spent about R10000 with the rims... and 1 whole Kg taken off... should be around 10.5kg then more or less.

Sell the shifter and FD and make the bike 1x10. Easy 400grams

Sell old wheelset and buy crest or easton xc90. The bike will feel a lot beter. I will to that before I go carbon on anything...

Thanx everyone for all the advice. I have a good Idea now on what to do. Sounds like new wheels is going to be the start, for competition and keep old ones for training. Will do the other stuff as money allows!!!??? Have to say he is doing his part with the training, and no weight to loose there. MTB Keeps him bussy and out of troubble. Thanx
