Which is the best entry bike

I am considering buying one of the following bikes, Fuji Nevada 1.5 29er, or Merida Big Nine 20D, or Titan Trail 2015 29er, or Silverback Spectra Comp, which one would be the better choice value for money, all are between R7k to R7.5k. Spec wise I think the Titan since it has air shock, however the Fuji being the cheapest one has better derailleurs frt and rear. Any recommendations ?

I would place frame spec up higher on the priority list than the component set on the bike.

*Most* of the manufacturers produce two layers of Hardtail, and if given the choice (IMHO) i would squeeze a bit more for the cheapest of the second layer bikes, than worrying about component set on the best 1st layer.

A prime example is between the GT Karakoram and the Avalanche where there is a small overlap in the top Karakoram and the Cheap Avalanche. Specialized Hardrock, Rock-hopper and the Crave is another example.

That said, i prefer advising going second hand for your first bike. The hub classifieds often has some good deals which you can still take to your LBS for servicing. Of course you loose the warranty as the second owner, but if you choose your manufacturer well, it shouldnt be a big concern (Avoid Giant hardtails, if you are heavy (above 100kgs), its a matter of time before the top bar breaks at the seat post.

I would consider 2nd hand - you would get a better spec bike. I know it can be daunting to buy 2nd hand but someone on bikehub in your area would help.

Some bike shops, for a small fee, can also do a "health check" on the bike. This should give you more peace of mind with your 2nd hand purchase and should the seller not want to let the bike get checked out you would know that maybe there's something to hide...
