OK i know it sounds nuts, but has anyone tried using an SLX crank with a 104 / 64 bcd and putting an Oval on each with the bigger one using a 32or34t and then having a 28t on the small one that you change to manually just for those crazy hills you sometimes find out there.

With all due respect, sounds like a dumb idea. Why not just keep the shifter? Unless of course you like to get your hands dirty out on the ride.

I've got that at the moment

Index (finger) shifting FTW

Because if you have a Narrow-Wide chainring, the shifter isn't going to help you

because oval rings wont work with shifter unless you buy RotorQ which are expensive.

want the advantage of Oval rings but with the backup of a super granny

I've kept my 24t for those crazy hills. One finger manual shift.

so do you run a normal 24 and then an oval on bigger spider...any clearance issues at all

Use the 32T ring and go get yourself a 11-40 or 11-42 cassette.

in essence, will it be a 1xconversion? why not leave the 28T and cycle with your hiking boots on for those crazy hills. :P

however, I cant see why it wont work.

Then I'm afraid the answer is to train more.

i train plenty but we have actual hills down here and on Saturdays race at Wartburg there was one certain hill that saw probably 80% of the field walking...thus a backup granny would be really helpful

Have a normal narrow/wide 30t with the 24t. I've found when using the 24t it rubs the NW if trying to use the small/fast 11-13-15 cogs, it's definitely not ideal but it works.

You will have some chainline issues because the inner ring will be too far in to run smaller gears on the cassette and if you used spacers under your NW then the chain might not fit onto the small ring.

Also make sure the RD can accomodate the difference in chain length.

I would just keep it normal 2x with shifter if you want to do this.

Not all cyclist are super-athletes and not all of us are dirt roadies riding gentle hills. There are lots of places in KZN (and elsewhere) where 1x is not really a wide enough range for the average rider and you end up walking the hills or spinning out the flats.
