Aero wheels

I have 2 questions. The first is, are aero wheels right for me? I'm light, around 55-58kg, I don't handle the wind well. My only A priority event is a tour to Cape Town, mostly flat roads with some minimal climbing and lots of wind . Group riding. I pretty much only cycle to do this tour. I currently run an aluminium wheelset, 1.35kg. Normal profile. I'm considering a deep section wheelset 38mm -43mm. Is this a good choice for me?

Second question. I'm looking at 2 wheelsets. Both around R9/10k. First is American classic 420 new 1.5kghttp://www.evobikes.co.za/wheels/wheelsets-road/american-classic-420-aero-3-wheelset.html the second is second hand but very good condition 3t accelero 40 team carbon alu brake surface. 1.8kg. I think the 3T is a really good deal but they are heavier than the AM's but I'm not sure if they are right for me.

Looking for some bikehub wisdom!

American Classic is such a underrated product

I only hear good things

Go for it!

38mm-ish is a good and safe standard for riding in the Cape

Have not heard good reviews about the 3T, also heavy so will take time to get up to speed.  AMC are always good wheels, also have a look at the AMC Victory 30, you will not break the bank if you decide aero are not for you based on your weight and riding in wind http://www.evobikes.co.za/wheels/wheelsets-road/american-classic-victory-30-tubeless-clincher-wheelset.html

Ok, thanks, glad the AMC's are getting good reviews... so what will these give me over my current wheels ( http://www.tri-cycles.net/wheels/road/edge-design-xlr-200/ )

When you say a tour to CT, do you mean a race tour, or a supported tour, with the intent of chilling, enjoying the views and the company?

If the latter, and you only cycle to do this tour, then save your cash, use what you have, (and hide in the group)..... :whistling:

Just a thought.....

Hehe, it's a relax and chill tour for the other guys, I'm a little off the pace, so feels like a bit of race to me!

Also isn't the point of cycling loads and loads, to be able to justify spending money on our bikes?

I've got the AMC Aeros and the Victory 30 tubeless. Both are really good wheels but I love the Aero's. The hubs are amazing and spin for ever and even though the internal width is pretty narrow for today's fashion they are still very solid. I'm a heavier sprinters build and they have only once given me a bit of flex in 3 years. Very light, strong and handle the wind very well (unlike the shallower, wider Victory 30's). The braking on them is also great in the wet or dry.

My thoughts when it came to buying them was simple. Why am I spending more coin on carbon wheels that are heavier, take longer to spin up and are questionable in the wet when some alu rims are top notch. Only thing you need to do is keep the nipples clean and you're sorted.

Ok, you're forgiven... but I'd be careful about messing with a cyclist wanting to spend cash on their bike, if I was you  :whistling:   :P

Not sure I understand why the shallower wider ones would not handle the wind as well?

The 2016 Aero's appear to have the same wider shape as the Victory's, just a few mm's deeper. What are the other differences between them?
