I''m running 34T oval /40T with (16T), SLX cassette , shimano XT long cage. Had more or less the same issue, tried everything, in the end a new derailleur did the trick. B-screw setting is very NB, as it is set at the moment shifting is absolutely perfect through all my gears.

Check your cassette for lateral play, could be freehub body wear. If the cassette has play it will cause upshift hassles as the derailleur won't line up cleanly with the sprockets.

Interesting. I genuinely think that it has something to do with the derailleur too. I have read extensively, and apparently Shimano have had more issues with 1x10 than SRAM. The suggestion in the states is to use a Shimano Ames Cage with the OneUp cage. Unfortunately those are difficult to get your hands on in SA

I'm running an SLX shadow+ with the Oneup Components RADr cage, 11-42T cassette with the 15&17 replaced with a 16T, and Kalbo 32T elliptical NW chainring, and finally, a 10spd Shimano Zee shifter......no problems what so ever for my Santa Cruz Tallboy LTc

Awesome. Where did you get the one up RAD cage?

Ask the LBS to test a new derailleur, quite sure its your problem

Does the length of the chain stays also not influence the angle of the chain .On a smaller frame the angle will be more acute than on a XL frame ??

The chainstay length doesn't change for different frame sizes.

Does anyone know if the clutch on sram x9 type 2.1 can be adjusted the same way the type 2.0 is adjusted... gonna replace my derailleur on my 1 X 10 setup.

Do people like fiddling with parts ? I'd rather be riding. Isn't it ultimately cheaper to just buy the proper parts and enjoy many hours of trouble free running?

I for one do but I also know it isn't everyone's cup of tea ..... perhaps those less technically adept should stick with stock configurations I guess?

Not sure if your problem has been answered... but here goes.

There is a big difference between the way a 10spd Shimano and a SRAM derailleur move across your cassette as you change gears. The SRAM follows the shape of the cassette and Shimano more horizontal. The result is that when you adjust the Shimano to accommodate the larger cogs it slows down the shifting and makes the rest of the indexing haphazard. Shimano have improved this considerably with the 11spd.

You can improve the shifting by going down to a 40T. That's what I run. It's still not perfect but manageable. Also look at you chainline compared to your mate.

Thanks Robodog.

I have decided to by a SRAM derailleur and shifter. I have a SRAM cassette and whilst I know that one can mix a Shimano derailleur with SRAM cassettes, I am of the belief that a SRAM RD will be the answer to my problems. Furthermore, I have read extensively on this topic and the general consensus is that SRAM medium or long cage RD handle a 11-42 a lot better than Shimano. I think it may have something to do with the 1:1 ratio (although this is just speculation)
