Hi

I am a first time buyer and would like some help in choosing a good first bike. I am not a sportsman in the regards that I will participate in events or races, I would like to purchase to road ride in order to remain fit.

The bike I am looking at Is a new "Axis A40 FS" 29" - I can get this bike for R9000.00.

Please could someone share some wisdom :)

Many thanks

Welcome to the world of cycling Zeno.

My 2 cents, Axis is a "cheap" bike which you will look at upgrading very soon into the sport, said upgrades can very quickly cost more than the bike at R9k.

I would suggest rather looking at a Giant or Merida. I see that Chris Willimse is selling a Giant road bike for R10k. This will give you a better basis to work from, meaning a good, durable frame which will give you many happy miles, you can then upgrade as you need/want to. http://www.cwcycles.co.za/bikes/bike-road

With a budget of around R9000 you will have a lot of choice right here on BikeHub 2nd hand. This would allow you to get something with better components and not have to worry about upgrading for a while.

For 9000 you can get a decent, semi-used light hardtail 29er which can be used for both Road and trail. Won't be as light and efficient as a road bike of a similar price, but it will be able to handle moderately technical offroad and 'pavement hopping '. Full suspension only if you gonna be doing mainly offroad trails or you have a sensitive back.

I disagree with the comments regarding that Axis. It is a damn good bike for the money (although you don't mention if it is new or 2nd hand). You won't get a full suspension 29er for that kind of money anywhere. There was a team sponsored with these bikes at the Epic a few years back and the bikes held up perfectly.

If they can withstand the rigours of the Epic, they can withstand anything.

I do agree that this is not the bike for you if you want to ride on the road. If your sole intention is to ride on the road, then get a proper road bike. When it comes to riding on the road, the difference is massive between a road bike and mountain bike.

If you only want one bike and you plan on riding a few trails as well as the road, take ByronH's advice and get a 29er hardtail mountain bike. It will do what you need it to do on the road and you can do some mountain biking too.

First time buyers rarely realize this, but it is very important to get the correct size frame.

Some bike shops will sell you any bike without even mentioning the sizing of the bike. Other than that, I don't know the axis or what components it has. But agree with Byron. Hard tail is nice as you can go anywhere on it. Who knows, maybe you prefer off-road...

That is actually an oddly well specced bike for that price. I'm guessing it'll weigh about half a ton though.

But if you're using it on the road, full sus will be a waste. Rather get a hardtail.
