Full RD cable housing on MTB

I am seriously considering this on both my FS and HT. On my HT I seem to often have issues with shifting due to the cable getting sticky where it goes through the plastic thingymajiggy under the BB.

Any opinions?

Is it an Epic? My stage race partner had his cable fed though a housing under the bottom bracket on his Epic. Much smoother and lasted longer.

DB - on my Epic it has a short piece of housing under the BB so there it isn't as much of an issue but on my S-works HT it uses one of those like plastic guides .......

His Epic has the same plastic bracket as I presume is on your HT. Just bypassed it. Can you not do a similar job as you have on your Epic?

I ride a Yeti asr and all the cables run on the top tube but am disappointed to see the 08 model runs the front derailleur below the BB. Dont know why they would change this. There was a post somewhere on the Hub about these little ferules that fit into the frame cable mounts to allow you to run a full outer all the way through without drilling your mounts. That might help you.

Think it's easier to make sure your bottles don't leak and just squirt a bit of water/lube on the thingymajiggy now and again.

I have been running full outer cable housing on my MTB's for about 6yrs now. I replace the outer every 6months or so but have zero shifting hassles. The outer just wears and then it needs to be replaced.

For the front derailleur I also cover the cable with a long piece of electrical conduit and attach it to cable stop that has a piepie on it. ALligators cable stops are perfect for this.

I only recently replaced that cable when I replaced the shifter. Can post pics for detail later [shuffles off to find digital camera]

The Shimano xtr cable kit also has the aligator style cable stops. TRy get these separate if you are going the xtr route as the cable outers are pre cut and for the life of me I dont know what bike they were for but they dont fit anything I have seen.

The cable stops have a longer sleeve at the ferule, like a little tube that the cable runs through to make it more difficult for crap to get in. They also have a rubber o-ring.

I use the XTR kit. It comes complete with cables, housing, ferrules, the lot. I replace on

a regular basis (6-8 months). It's more expensive but I don't have shifting problems due

to cables. I also strip and clean them after a dirty ride. The Motorex cleaning spray is

brilliant for this.

Full cable outer is the way to go.  I have been running my cables on a Scott Genius RC ltd like that for 2 years now with no hassles at all.  The problem with using your water bottle to wash your cables en route is that this tends to get more grit stuck to them.  Exposed cable is the devil, and even more so exposed cable running under the BB.  What bright spark came up with that idea?

I also use the XTR rubber end caps and so far no problems. I bought them seperate as I did not buy a full XTR cable set. Works out to about R50 for a set of for and you will need 2 sets.

BUT I saw the Commencal guys run a sealed Alligator iLink set. It still fits the normal cable stops and is basically only the inside thst runs the full length.

I've got Nokons on my two racing MTB's which I've got set up as a fully enclosed system. Even before then I used to run full length housings for the rear jockey. After months of muddy rides, including very muddy Knysna MTB races, the gears remain smooth as per day 1. Definatelly the way to go if you want smooth gears.

Gore Ride-On is making cables and outers again.  They also have a sealed system (quite expensive), but in my opinion better than Nokon.
