Here you go - posting that link again. It's from a couple of weeks ago and I don't know the seller (or the bikes) but if you like something and it seems reasonable I am sure you can post the details here and get some good advice before you buy.

Will keep my eyes open in case I see anything else. We just got our first so want to take our time and get used to it before we get another.

As mentioned you need to consider spending 5K on a bike each, to give yourself the opportunity to enjoy the sport on bikes that will be closer to the feel, spec and thrill of what you will likely end up using out on the trails when you get into this! By that we mean, bikes that will have an expected level of performance, durability and general workmanship.

If you buy super cheap, unknown, large chainstore brands, you put yourself completely on the back foot. Not simply when you are riding on your own and things easily begin to brake, but any time you then try to ride with a group of established riders, you are not just trying to overcome the fact that you're a beginner, but the penalties of trying to keep up on a bike like this make it almost futile.

A second hand bike in that 5K region will give you a real chance to explore the sport in a much more meaningful way! Rather hold out and keep your cash till you are able to make that kind of spend.

Something like this will be a very useful start for your missus!

(Bear in mind there are a few different disciplines in MTB. This type of bike is geared towards mass MTB participation events, such as the 94.7 and Argus MTB events)

To throw a spanner in the works, I do "MTB" for fun. I have done 50km races and have survived on my MTB. All in my MTB has cost me R1500.

I have the one in the link, although I paid R400 not R2500, then some tubeless tyres and sealant, a quill stem converter, new seat post and grips. All in R1500.

I have only done 1500km but find my spend per use reasonable.

As a reality check, I can replace the ENTIRE groupset exc crank for R1000. My brakes have lasted ages, V brake but meh, never gone over a cliff.

The components are solid, nothing has brocken, I can find spares and I have really enjoyed the MTB I have done.

Doing Knysna 80km on it in July :D

There is a certain joy that comes with overtaking people who are riding newer, much more expensive machinery.  I suspect you experience this joy on a regular basis...

I have done it last year, practice your climbing quite seriously, lots of them, biggest in the first 20km and be prepared for nice singletrack through the plantation.

I just enjoy the simplicity. No shocks, no silly issues with gears and just have a lot of fun.

Came 20th in the 50km last time in knysna, enjoy the climbing.
