Hi Guys,

I have no idea about BBs to be honest.

I have a Shimano FC-M522-L, 42/32/24T Crankset.

I understand that it is a Shimano Octalink BB, but I have no idea about length etc.

The bike is a Silverback Sola 3 2015.

Any input would be appreciated.

Measure the width of the BB shell - it'll either be 68 or 73mm. Then measure the length of the spindle from end to end. These are the only measurements you'll need.

You definitely don't need a new crankset or bb to make it a 1x. I have done it and it works.

My BB is shot though so I need a new one.

As Far as i Have Seen and Been Told i Need a New Crankset as The Chain rings on My crankset are Permanantly Fixed and cant have the chain rings removed Mine is a 3 x 8 System and Chain Rings are Permanantly fixed

Its This Crankset ( Shimano Acera FC-M311, 42x32x22T )

what crank could i attach to this bb that would have the correct chain line ?

Thank you

If you are changing the crank change the BB as well.  That BB is on its way out.  Get a GXP or Shimano outboard (Hollowtec 11).

I see you are a bike mechanic. What price would one be looking at to do that conversion. Mid-level crank etc.?

Even if you were able to swop the chain rings alone, you often find that a new crankset is cheaper than buying 3 new chain rings.

Get the one that matches yours.  (BB shell width and length).  This illustrates my point.  BB52 R209, BB ES 51 R479.  More than 2X for an older, heavier and difficult to fit BB.

I have a workshop - not much retail at all.  By the time I get parts in you may as well get from your local shop.  Most cranks are speed specific and you have limited choice within that range.  Shops like Solomon's and Linden usually have "off the shelf" options and others - like myself - will order in for you.
