Stolen: KTM Aera Comp 27.5 2016
When: 29 May 2016
Where: Cape Town, Western Cape

One of my friends was bike jacked yesterday on Red Hill, just below the Kleinplaas Dam at about 17h15.

The assailant (he was a black guy wearing jeans and a light brown hoodie jacket) ran up to him head on down the trail and tried to push him off the bike. He then pulled out a knife and shouted "give it to me". After that he went into my buddies pocket and pulled out some snacks, throwing them on the ground, he then took a step backwards. At this point my buddy took a step backwards, pulled out his pepper spray from his back pocket and sprayed the guy in the face. While trying to cover and wipe his face he was rifling through his pockets and saying "I'm going to kill you, you think I'm joking, I'm going to kill you", so suspecting a gun to be pulled my buddy bolted.

He managed to get an SOS message through to me, so I shot through and picked him up. We looked at the trail head, but there was no sign of tyre tracks. Went to report it at Simons Town police station (very efficient). While there he got lots of phone calls from the Black Hill security guys as well as a SAN Parks ranger who went out immediately to check the trail (it was dark by then). Unfortunately he didn't find anything.

The bike is literally only a few days old (not even a week has passed since he bought it) so it's condition is 'as new'.

The picture below was taken 5 to 10 minutes before the attack, so it looks exactly as in the pic, down to the amount of water in the water bottle!

A few people have grouped together to create a reward for the safe return (and hopefully the succesful conviction of the assailant) of the bike - it's currently standing at around R3,500

Wow that sucks, glad your mate is ok though.

This is really getting out of hand.

Ya, that's the important thing.  The bike can be replaced.

But it's still ridiculous that you can't even ride in your back yard...

Can you help provide some info on his route; from entry to the dam and exit to where you picked him up? Also any other routes taken either to lookouts/around the dam etc..

Would also be good to now which exits were checked for bike tracks, assuming your friend knows.

It happened on a trail that goes between the dam and Red Hill road.  We looked for tracks where that trail pops out onto Red Hill road. I picked him up at the parking area near the water works - he had run there.

For other info it's best to give him a call - I've given his cell number as the contact number.
