Petacchi guilty of doping
06/05/2008 14:10  - (SA)   <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Lausanne - Italian cyclist Alessandro Petacchi has been found guilty of doping and stripped of his five stage wins in the 2007 Giro d'Italia.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport also ruled the 34-year-old sprinter must serve a ban until the end of August. The penalty will be applied retroactively from last November.

Tuesday's ruling relates to allegations Petacchi excessively used an asthma drug during the 2007 Giro. All of Petacchi's results since October 31 will also be scratched.

As a result, Petacchi will miss this year's Tour de France

From Cyclingnews.com:

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced this morning that Italian Alessandro Petacchi, 34, would be suspended for one year for having tested positive for an asthma medication during the 2007 Giro d'Italia. It ruled that the Team Milram sprinter did not use the Salbutamol -- an asthma drug -- as doping but for medicinal purposes.

The CAS found that Petacchi "failed to show that the Salbutamol concentration ... was the consequence of him inhaling Salbutamol in accordance with his ATUE." However, they also found that although the finding was caused by Petacchi taking too much of the medication, it "was not taken with the intention of enhancing his performance.

"Considering that the athlete bears no significant fault or negligence, the CAS panel has fixed the period of his ineligibility to one year."

The topic heading is clearly wrong as he was not found guilty of doping. The report quoted by the OP is nothing other than seeking sensation at the expense of the truth.

Umm...he was found guilty of doping by CAS and suspended for one year.  He has also been disqualified from the 2007 Giro and all races between 1 November and the court ruling.

CAS ruled that he did NOT use the Salbutamol as doping.

Lets not get silly with the semantics.  Doping is when you violate the anti-doping laws.  Pettachi was over the limit therefore is guilty of doping.

Whether he intended or actually enhanced his performance is irrelevant, otherwise all those that rehydrate would be guilty of doping.

I was just going to say semantics, but I wasn't sure if he would understandWink

And for the record I have used Salbutamol, and I am not asthmatic, and it does provide a benefit. Funny how many "elite" athletes are asthmatic...

I am asthmatic and use Salbutamol periodically.  Can't say I ever noticed a benefit.  I never bother getting a TUE although technically I should.  A couple puffs from an inahaler before a race does not contain much Salbutamol and doesn't appear to give me any benefit (other than preventing Asthma attacks brought on by pollen and other irritants especially in Winter and early Spring).

Hmmm, basically he had exemption for three (3) inhalations, he took (a lot) more and was caught.

Thats doping.

..............anyway a little birdie has told me that PATXI VILA from Lampre has tested positive for testosterone - which would explain his hasty "mid race" retreat from the Tour of Romandy!!

We shall have to wait and see, but.................!

......................Patxi wasnt the only cyclist to leave mid race now was he..............................hmmm, I wonder.?
