All their stuff is top class, but i would try their ovl one, I've been using it for a month now and although some of the benefits might be placebo effect, I do believe there is some merit to it.

Try the oval chain rings on Aliexpress.com. They are about R350, I have one and this is my third NW chain ring. The Aliexpress one is the best one I have used so far. They have every size that you could want, oval and round.

Quick question the oval chainrings I see all over are not narrow wide should I be using a guide even just top one?

If its NW you don't need a guide , having a clutch mech helps but i ran 1x10 for 2 years with just a NW ring without clutch and maybe had 2 chain drops

The idea behind oval is you have weak spots and strong spots as you pedal the oval makes you turn (if its a 32t oval) 30 at your weakspot and 34 at your strongspot

It does not actually feel harder or easier to me but what you do notice is you have a much more even pedal stroke on steep hills which corralates to constant traction

You wasting your time without NW chain ring if you go single.

With regards to a chain guide, you need to try riding without one, most people are OK without it providing they use a NW chain ring.

I use the oval chain ring, cannot really say it is better or worse. In theory, it looks like it should do something, basically get you to pedal quicker through the dead spots. On Aliexpress the oval is about 2 dollars more than the round.

Does the ovals come in different "grades" of oval, so is one more round than the other or are they all similar "oval". Ive seen a few ovals which you can see is quite oval and then others which looks very round.

To me they are all the same, if it looks round, then it is round. They appear about 10 % oval, i.e. long diameter 10 % more than the short diameter.

This they do, not really in "ovality" (it that's even a word) but more in terms of the offset, it can range anything from 105 degrees to 118 Degrees, all depends where the manufacturer thinks your "power band" is.

Oh and PS.... the Kalbo Elliptical and the Rapide are both NW as well, so no, you don't need a chain guide.

Kalbo - "112.5 degree timing offset,10-11% Ovality on elliptical rings"

From what i recall the Rapide is around 107 deg offset so not as aggressive as some on the market currently.

Awesome, that's what I was wondering if the oval were NW too. Wouldn't go for anything not narrow wide without a guide I don't think. Don't really want to run a guide as I have a clutch mech so should be alright with a good chainring. That's why at the start I thought raceface as many reviews seem good with no chain drops. Going to try out Rapide NW 32 and keep my 11-36 with no one up for now. Went for a ride today and beating personal records on strava uphill each week as I get fitter with a 30 upfront and a 11/36 at the back. Oval 32 then should be alright. I hope. [emoji1303]

For anyone who stumbles upon this thread in the future here is an update. I kept my 11-36 cassette and ordered a Rapide oval 32t chainring. I stay in Cape Town and paid 100 extra for next day so I received it this morning. Looks great, easy to install and made a small plastic tab with my dremel to fit over the front derailleu. Took off both chainrings front shifter. Riding around felt pretty much the same as a round ring although uphill I could go one gear down. Compared to using a 30t with the 36 back cog I think one gear down on a 32 up a hill is a great improvement. Feels like it gives you a small rest in between rotations almost. Strava times for a few sections improved too. I put that down to maybe 40% new chainring and 60% excitement but won't be switching back anytime soon. Love have the right side of the bars free of the shifter and mounted my dropper button in a much better easier to reach place. Great not thinking about changing rings upfront. Chain feels solid with the shadow plus rear derailleu and can't see myself dropping a chain anytime soon. Great purchase. I say to anyone who is used to riding a 30t with 11/36 can go 32 oval and won't really even need a 40/42 unless you ride some really steep long climbs. Have my eye on a 40 one up but for now all is great.

I went the whole nine yards and put a 42T expander cog on there with a Lindarets GoatLink and OneUp RAD Cage as well...all to ensure great shifting performance and wear.

awesome never actually seen that cage attachment where did you get it? Shifting seems great now for me but think it will get a little sloppy if I add a 42 or 40. Looks like a good idea [emoji1303]

Found the rad cage at chain reaction looks pretty cool. Can't justify going 1x11 myself. Riding a giant trance 2015 would rather get new wheels, shorter stem and a few other upgrades before that so looks like a cool way to go if I put on a 40/42

Ordered one from their website which took forever to arrive but then found one on here and bought it. When the imported one arrived I just sold it. Someone on BikeHub said they stock it. Will see if I can find out who.
