back injury recovery time

Recommended Posts

I had a stupid slow speed OTB 2 weeks ago. Landed straight on my pip and literally felt it travel down my spine. Back was proper sore and muscles all tightened up around my shoulder blades.

Went the a GP he did all the checks for nerve damage etc. there was nothing, he said he didn't think an x-ray was needed just soft tissue damage. He said go see a physio which i did, she also couldn't find any issue.

After a week I was still sore and only just able to function without pain killers. Decided to get an x-ray to just make sure and guess what fractured/anterior wedging of T4/T5. So no riding for the next 6/8 weeks.

This year has been a write off for me.

Crash at Argus: 3 broken ribs, bruised kidneys and internal bleeding.

Then first week back on the bike rip a cleat out and go OTB at 60km/h: shattered clavicle, deep laceration on my forehead, broken ribs and internal bleeding.

and now this!!! seriously considered throwing in the towel.

Jeepers bud, I think I would have dumped the bikes by now. That's some serious damage to your body, hope you heal up soon!

I had a bruised coccyx that progressed to an inflamed coccyx that kept me off the bike for about 4 weeks so don't rush it

I have a herniated L5; don't know how or when this happened

My last ride has been in April

Its pushing against the sciatic nerve in my right leg resulting in the leg feeling like its constantly cramping.

Doc has suggested no riding and weights for 3 months since my last consult last month.

its been a loooooonnnnnggg month and still two more to go !

Dude, have this checked by a Neurosurgeon please. I left this same problem too long (although I didn't know it was this at the time) and ended up with nerve damage in the leg.

Get proper scans and rays taken. And see an ortho specialist. Do not mess around with a back injury. It will come back in 15-20 years and bite you.

I had a stress fracture in L4 and L5 in 1996. Didn't know my injury was that bad after being told by the emergency radiologist nothing is wrong. Woke up one morning, couldn't move due to spasms, and threw up due to the pain.

And do rehab. A stuffed lower back will cripple you later in life

Hey Friedpiggy, just remember that every day a broken bone is left alone, the healing process carries on, and the alignment of the broken surfaces may not be what you are used to i.e. your life may change!

Get those x-rays pronto!

I've been off the bike for 2 months with a broken hip, and had my first 6km ride on Sunday past, using granny gear. Leg is weak as all hell, zero endurance, but at least it's pain free through the whole range of movement on the bike.

Physio and surgeon are happy with the progress, although I am frustrated beyond belief. These things take time, and the older you are, the longer they take....

Good luck with recovering from your crash, and hope you heal up quick!

Go see a real Dr, I burst/herniated 3 discs and had an emergency op,and slight nerve damage. My story is here on The Hub somewhere, anyway, I had a fusion and am doing great....
