Bladed spokes vs Round spokes

26er, if you want to go faster get a 29er!

However, if you want to go stronger... copper/brass nipples AND washers (did I have to go there? ), and round DB spokes.

If you ride dassie/meerkat terrain, then go for the bladed spokes as nsBB stated

Hey Pete,no worries,I changed from 26" about 4 years ago..just kept the hub name from when I first sold my 26" bike

Hi Hubbers

I need urgent help! I'm struggling to get 302mm and 303mm straight pull spokes. Any help please????

Depending on how many you are looking for I can help with black double butted round or straight gauge in silver or black.

As to the OP's question I always recommend round DB J bend spokes on any wheel build.  More spokes than your mates' find acceptable and brass nipples.

Bladed spokes allow wheels to be built on machines.  That is about where the benefit ends.

I'm not picky at the moment. Looking for 14×302 and 14×303mm spokes. The lighter, the better.

The cons of bladed spokes:

Bladed spokes can be up to 3-5 times more expensive than round DB spokes.

They twist really easily and require a spoke holder when building the wheel, so it takes considerably longer to build.

They might be more difficult to source a replacement in event of spoke breakage in remote areas.

The pros of bladed spokes:

They weight about 2/3 of a round spoke

In my opinion the aerodynamic advantage is marginal/negligible.

Regardless of the wheel (road, mountain, deep-section) just go round, double butted.

Agreed with most of what you said but not sure how you arrive at weight is 2/3 of a round spoke. If they have the same cross sectional area, they weigh the same.

On a road bike, I would say a bladed spoke has benefit. For a mtb because your speed is so much lower and it is in the turbulent air behind a wide, knobbly tyre, I would agree the advantage is negligible

As a "hobby wheel builder" who does not benefit from trade discounts I started with double butted spokes. A couple of months ago I .built my first wheelset with Alpina bladed spokes. Despite the extra work that goes into the build I prefer using them on both road and mtb. I don't bother with double butted anymore.

ITS FRIDAY!!!

Bladed spokes are better in every way. Worth every cent. You could buy round spokes but you will never be bladed spokes cool.

- They are lighter

- They are for the most part just as strong (as they are just flattened round spokes

- They are faster due to aerodynamic nature of they blade design

- They make a cool noise through the wind intimidating your round spoke foes

Anyone saying they are not faster or more aero has not heard of accumulation of marginal gains...

Yes the are more expensive and tricky to work with - all worth it except if you just wheelsuck. You goto use all these marginal gains when you outsprint the bunch at the end...
