Research towards improving Cycling Safety

Zahur,

Anyone putting in effort towards cycling safety is a winna, winna chicken dinna dude in my view! So, firstly, good job chap! Did your survey. Yes music, on a loudspeaker (a bluetooth handsfree speaker for a phone is the actual device). Works grand. Can get some tunes going especially when I'm riding solo, but still hear ambient vehicle and traffic noise as I don't have anything in my ear.

I am however more interested in understanding what correlations you are hoping to expose by making the focus of cycling safety on whether someone listens to music and which device type they use if they do whilst on the bike?

I personally was hoping for questions more like this:

There's a bunch more I could come up with, but I think I've already got carried away....

Good luck with your thesis and keep us updated please!

Hold on, lets help the dude out. Should I turn these into a poll... What-dya-say hubland? Should be worth a laugh for a Friday!

Edit: Removed questions from here and added to the polls in the link above

Hi,

Thanks for showing such an interest in my topic, the poll that you started I'm actually going to use, so that's a huge help!

The purpose of my research is to formulate a design solution that will increase your spatial awareness while cycling, whether you listen to music or not. Listening to music while cycling is an obvious distraction and can become far more dangerous for cyclists as you're unable to hear ambient sounds. however the design solution isn't necessarily geared towards promoting listening to music while cycling, but more so cyclists that have partial hearing, or deaf cyclists.

The outcome that I am hoping for should promote cycling safety, and allow for cyclists that have partial hearing or whom are deaf to feel more confident on the road. Overall the design solution should help increase all cyclists spatial awareness.

and then .....ride away? ......have the guts to face up to them.......accompany them to SAPS or hospital?......in what capacity are you involved with East Coast Cycling?

As others have indicated, this was tongue-in-cheek.  I just think anyone riding a bike with any form of distraction, such as music in their ears, is crazy.  You need to have all your wits about you when cycling.  I am the chairman of East Coast Cycling and am probably the most ardent promoter of safe cycling in KZN.  All our members will vouch for that.

No worries, it's something that is close to the heart of most of the people who spend time on this site! Many of us have lost mates to incidents on the road, so it's quite a personal topic that carries a strong focus for the majority!

Excellent! The spatial awareness idea sounds really innovative! Have you come across this product in your research?

Good luck! Looking forward to more news from you as you go through the process! Thanks for the feedback!
