Onza Tyres or something lighter? Upcoming races

Hi there

I ride a Giant Trance 2015 2, currently have (F) Onza Ibex 2.25 FCR 60 TPI and ® Onza Canis 2.25 C3 60 TPI and love them for the riding I do.

Want to start doing some Enduro events end of the year and may switch to a 2.4 Ibex up front not sure what for rear (if the Canis C3 casing is reliable enough for those events...)

Question is I want to do a few Cross country races Fedhealth maybe and Spur MTB Classic. Never done any events before but pretty fit. Should I just keep the same tyres on even though the terrain looks more chilled than I usually ride or should I swap them for something with less rolling resistance... I know the Trance is not a lightweight XC racer but using XC tyres I'm guessing will make a difference. If swapping them out suggestions would be great.

Thanks

(I know there are lots of tyre threads just curious based on the different race choices)

Canis is already an XC tyre, and the rear is the only one that you should consider reducing rolling resistance on (front is for GRIP) so I'd say keep the ones you have. Unless you're at the pointy end, in which case you wouldn't be on a trance. So my opinion remains unchanged.

For your enduro events, stick that Ibex that you have at the front on to the back. The Canis CS casing is paper thin and will not stand up to punishment, but the freeride casing version will.

Perfect thanks had that in mind. Should I put a 2.4 Ibex up front? Does it make a big difference compared to the 2.25. Will stick the current Ibex at the back for Enduro events, loving these tyres. Yea spot on want to focus on endro style events more and just do some longer XC races for fun and training not too worried about time.

Yes. Massive difference with the higher volume. Means you can run lower pressures, which means more grip.

I run an Ibex rear and Cittrus up front(both 2.4) , fantastic grip even in super loose stuf

But they are pretty sucky for rolling resistance , if you want something for both I would stay with your current setup

Both of those Ibex's are pretty darn big and I've just been getting friendly with the 2.4 on the front and that sticks like a a sticky thing covered in stick and smeared with extra 'stick'.

Still trying to find a nice middle ground in the rears myself and at the moment I'm running a Ardent Race EXO which is deffo fast rolling but is a lot balder than I am used to but does seem pretty tough and hasn't put me on my arse yet and held down fine at Contermanskloof blacks today. A couple of moments were 'interesting' but never boring!

Am keen to swap it out for a standard Ardent to see what that is like once I've killed the race version.

Stay in the southern suburbs so like the setup I have now for round here and normal everyday riding will use it for XC stuff too as iv just learnt.

Im around 75kg and run ® 26 (F) 23psi and works well round here. Go up and down a little depending on terrain.

Main concren was Enduro stuff and what I was going to do as the back tyre wont work for that (Canis). Heard good things about Magic Mary and HR2, Have not tried anything but the setup now so always keen on suggestions.

(F) Ibex 2.4 ® Ibex 2.25/2.4

(F) Cittrus 2.4 ® Ibex 2.4

Is 2.4 all round recommended for enduro can always get 2 Ibex 2.4 and keep the 2.25 for round here.

Heard lots about the Ardent just ended up with the same brand back and front when I walked out of the shop. Also trying to find the middle ground at the moment my Ibex Canis rolls great and I don't lose the back end unless I want to push it around but for rougher stuff I do hold my breath with the C3 Cross Country Casing as I have slapped a few rocks on the down hills.

Magic Mary is a truly brilliant tyre.

Still here, but he said with his existing tyres and (unfortunately) MM is $$$

Going to hang onto the setup I have for races thanks for the help! When I change tyres for rougher stuff what would you recommend? Need to get a new set by year end anyway so can go different brand and would like to try out different setups so I have something to compare to.

Magic Mary (F) whats the spec 2.35 evo gravity ones? and then best for Rear?

My go to recommendation is a Magic Mary 2.35 Super Gravity Trailstar and Rock Razor 2.35 Super Gravity Trailstar. The latter is SUPER fast rolling due to the small middle knobs, but has teh same side knobs as the Magic Mary so it can corner like a demon.

Can reduce the front to a Snakeskin if you want.

Cool thanks very much will give that combo a try for the more demanding events

The other day I fitted my set of High Roller II's TR (the el cheapo OEM versions I got on my bike) and have been riding them since.

I had a real hory sheet moment when I rode the first piece of techy trail - grip for days. Man, I was so chuffed with those tyres!

Still love my Michelins, but I rekindled my fanboidom with Maxxis.

Quick Question, I have the Ibex front and Canis on the back. The Canis is a bit worn out on the back so will need to get a new one in a month or so. If i'm riding a mountain bike race should I rather buy another Canis before and slap it on front instead of the Ibex or will the rolling resistance be pretty similar having just the Canis back and Ibex front?
