Hi

Carry some sealant like Stan's to try and repair small punctures. You will also need a bomb and small pliers to remove the valve core, so that you can get the sealant into the tire and inflate the tire after. Spin the wheel to seal the puncture.

I also carry an old tubby as a backup that has some dried glue on it, you also need a bomb to get the pressure of the tubby back to 8/9 bar so that it sticks. You may need some tire levers and a small knife to get the punctured tubby off. Don't use too much glue when you fit the tubby in the first place, makes it very hard to get off. You can't carry a new tubby as a spare, unless you have pre-stretched it, also need to have put some glue on it. Doesn't matter if the glue is dry, it will stick to the rim once you inflate the tire.

In the past I have ridden with Stan's sealant in the tubby (50 to 100 mls). This will prevent about half of punctures that could happen. You can't use sealant with a latex tube, it wrecks the tube after a few months.

Make sure there is enough there is enough glue.....dont want to roll a tubbie....It doesnt end well

There is an aerosol can with latex sealant in. Much like the cans you would use on a car, just a lot smaller. GEAX makes them aswell as CAFFE LATEX as far as im aware. I just ride with said can in my jersey. But usually the upside of riding tubbies has a downsdide and thats they flatting part. I would say go tubeless with a full carbon clincher intead.

Mind the ignorance as well.

So would it be fine riding tubbies permanently with sealant in it?

Yes, as long as the tube is not latex (as on some expensive tubbies). Sealant does dry out, so eventually you will end up with lots of rubbery bits inside your tubby, if you keep topping up.

For that reason I prefer not to use sealant, until it punctures. Then use the sealant after the fact to fix the puncture.

If you take extra care in the races to always keep away from the left side of the road, you don't puncture too often.

I once use a whole tube of Continental glue to put to tubby on. Couldn't get it off. Now I use normal Contact glue.
