I don't think you know what a fixie is?

Turning it into a singlespeed is a great idea. Turning it into a fixie is a great idea if he will use it to ride to the pub or in town. Fixie and mountain biking don't mix well.

 

Just to clarify in case you are confused.

taking the gears off makes it a singlespeed.

Taking the gears off and making it a fixed cog without a freehub makes it a fixie. Fixies can't freewheel. That kinda sucks when mountain biking. Especially in technical terrain?
