Hi all,

I am a foreigner (European) staying for a year in Pretoria and was looking to pickup some MTB.

I have done a fair amount of MTB biking but never really heavily invested into a bike.

I just rode the one I had at home (Which was a Merida bike).

I am now looking on OLX, Gumtree and Bikehub for a bike in the pretoria Area as I do

not have a car yet :-) so I am a bit limited for now. I have no idea about the brands here and the budget.

It seems sometimes there are bikes online, which are too good to be true, so not sure if I can

trust the sellers sometimes.

I was looking in the range of 3k - 5k and not sure if thats realistic.

I saw brands like, Titan, Raleigh, Silverback, Cubixx, Axis

Examples:

https://www.olx.co.za/ad/raleigh-mxr-29er-mountain-bicycle-ID163OvF.html

https://www.olx.co.za/ad/raleigh-26-mtb-ID15ZxYC.html

https://www.olx.co.za/ad/titan-sport-bike-for-sale-only-serious-buyers-ID163KZv.html#f43e9f345e (a bit strange as it appears on and off on OLX)

Then this guy is selling two bikes for pretty cheap

https://www.gumtree.co.za/u-seller-listings/imak/v1u109887760p1

And a nice one looked this one:

https://www.gumtree.co.za/a-sports-bicycles-fitness/eastern-pretoria/scott-scale-60-mountain-bike/1001814471610911052295609

But feel its a bit steep (6K) for that bike not sure if the components are good?

So just wanted to have an idea from the forum:

* What budget should I set and any resell value after I used it for a year?

* What are the good priced brands? I do not need the best or so, just a proper good bike.

* As a foreigner what to watch out for buying bikes on OLX/Gumtree?

Thanks for the help

Hi , Welcome o South Africa!!!

You can pick up some really decent 26'' bike for that price range

You are obviously looking for a medium

I like this one https://www.olx.co.za/ad/raleigh-26-mtb-ID15ZxYC.html

there are some scam on OLX and Gumtree, so make sure you check out the bike before you hand over cash. Also try to take someone with you when meeting the seller (Friend / College)

Good luck and happy ridding

meet the seller in a public secure place where you feel safe otherwise just say no

if it sounds too good to be true then it isn't true

id rather only buy off the bikehub classifieds than anywhere else

I agree. Stay off olx and Gumtree. Buy off the bikehub and check out the poster's rating.

Cash is king and meet in a public place. Or alternativel, see if the seller is willing to meet at the local bike shop.

Hi all,

Thanks a lot for the recommendations.
I bought the Raleigh one.

Very friendly person and I got all kind of extras with it like the shoes and extra gears, some bike patching stuff, a pump etc. Components are nice only the disc brakes are not always retracting so will have to look into making that smooth again.

Hopefully it wil last for a while.

I can start riding now!
