My experience with wet weather clothing, is that you end up wet anyway, but from sweat inside the kit.

My experience as well

I have a few Helly Hansen undershirts which work very well at keeping me warm when it rains. I also wear a wind jammer

Its just cold for the first 10 minutes....

On a serious note, if you are doing fair distance ( time) while it's raining, you may start feeling cold after a while, due to the water on your skin simulating the cooling effects of sweat.

So although a rainproof jacket does not keep you dry because of the sweat inside. It does keep you comfortable over longer distance and duration rides.

Some people have different areas of their bodies that may enhance the feeling of being cold, eg: feet, head, ears etc. So I suggest making sure you are prepared to keep those areas warm during wet weather riding.

I have started some afternoon rides in summer at 30degrees, and after finishing the latter half of the ride in a thunderstorm and rain, I got home feeling cold enough to really want to get into a hot shower in the middle of summer.

Takes me 5 minutes to ride home.... all downhill - so don't even get warm...

If it's raining then I would rather take a car - roads are too slick in the rain to be comfortable (I am happy to race in the rain) and I have had a couple of hard falls because of wet roads.

That said - I have some columbia under shirts that are fantastic - look like woven thermal blanket on the inside - also great for winter riding - as is the anatomic kiddies bib like thing I have - keeps the wind off the chest and is easily removable.

The MTB with mud guards is a good idea for most of the spray.

What are you covering the bag with?

Also don't like wet socks/feet - what are you using?

Got a full gym, with steam room, waiting at the office.

Bought a rain cover for my backpack and the 94.7 expo some years back that works well but it is reaching its end of life, as my backpack as well. Nowadays there are many backpacks on the market that sells with a rain cover.  Will be buying one soon.  In one of the other threads it has been discussed.  I am looking at the Thule Commuter bag.
