Holdfast Upright Bike Holder

Anyone tried one of these Holdfast kits?

I'm looking for an affordable solution to replace my cumbersome Buzzrack and these seems good value.

The towbar kits are just too expensive and the Buzzrack takes way too much time to setup

yes using the 15mm thru axle versions x3 on a 4x4 expedition rack for some 2+ years now. I had one converted with new alu inserts to take a boost fork.

The front bit that holds the fork works ok. Reasonably sturdy but I'd prefer if the base was wider and stronger...the securing nuts are only M5 with quite a short thread in the sliding plates. The base part is powder coated steel and showing a bit of rust....why can't they do it properly.

You have to use your fork's axle because the thru axle version doesn't come with its own axle. The QR version comes with a cheapish QR skewer.

The plastic holder for the rear tyre is too narrow for even a 2.1 tyre...dunno why they bother. Wrote them about it 2 years ago and they acknowledged my email but still haven't changed it. Won't fit a single thru-axle bike in the country but why would they care.

So, overall it works perfectly except the useless plastic tyre holder for rear wheel. For the money I expect better quality though. The only alternatives I found are imported Thule and Rocky Mounts designs at even higher cost.

If you buy these you also need a solution for the now loose front wheel. Lotsa modern front hubs have removable endcaps that can unscrew or fall out in the turbulence on your roofrack so if you plan to tie the wheel onto the bike or the rack, buy a bag of long cable ties to thread through the hub to prevent bits going missing. Old toestraps make great ties for securing a wheel to a rack or bike frame. Alternatively get a wheel bag so you can put the loose wheel inside the car even when its dirty.

Fitted them on my D/C, works good except for the rear wheel mount, as discussed it is a plastic piece with velcro straps. Its possible to fabricate something for the rear wheel, still working on that.post-42857-0-52384600-1480420238_thumb.jpg

Fantastic. Now I just need to figure out if the roof rails on the Discover 2 are adequate or if I need to invest in a roof rack as well

What rack are you using on the back of the D/C that fits over the tonneau cover and is your tonneau cover using a railing fixed to the load area of the D/C? Just trying to figure out how the roof rack fits at the back. I have been looking at that option myself as I am not a big fan of the towbar rack that I currently use.

The rack is the holdfast classic, and the tonneau cover has a rail, but fabricated a bracket which is mounted (read pozi-drived) on the inside, underneath the tonneau cover rails. It is very sturdy,as I did not trust the gutter extrusions supplied with the racks. I am still busy with some finishing touches, will post some pics.

Thanks that would be very nice to see.
