Hi all,

Getting ready for our vacation to Montagu and cannot wait! Long open gravel roads (I know nothing special, but hey I am a photographer, I will keep myself busy with pics) on the farm.

Anyways, please correct me if I am wrong, I will need:

- 2 x Tubeless Values

- Rim Tape

I am 80% sure I have rim tape in both my rims (the colour was green) and looks like plastic sort of.

Not sure if that is rim tape? If I do not have what rim tape would you recommend or can I get anyone. My friend's rim tape almost looks like a mini inner tube, but it has the tubeless value and everything.

Also, I am fitting 2 x Maxxis Ikon 29 x 2.2 tyres.

Any help will be appreciated thanks. :)

I could see from your photos on your add you were a photographer.

You will need some sealant also to seal the setup.

I would rather just replace the current tape as you.never know how well it was put on or how old it is. Stans have a tubless tape and sealent which is really good but pricey.

I used gorilla tape for my setup and it worked perfectly. You can set up any tyre/rim combo tubless and most of them you will need a compressor more than likely, the petrol station is your friend.

Just to be safe, replace the rim tape, Gorilla tape works like a charm. And please, to save yourself a lot of hassles,do not use cheap,latex/ammonia based sealant. Remove your current rim tape, and clean the rims properly with methylated spirits to remove old gunk. Then after the 3rd beer,go to a garage after you huffed and puffed trying to bead the tyres, use the garage compressor to bead. Good luck, and enjoy the trails.

Okay sweet, I hear your point. Uhm... As a student, my money is almost everytime on zero, so would love to get Stans's tubeless tape, but eish haha.

Is the tape literally call 'Gorilla tape'? Will call around my local bike shops and see where I can find them also for a good price.

Lucky my friend has a compressor, but I think he lost the Presta adapter, but my friend got both his Maxxis Ikons fitted without bombs nor a compressor but with a workshop pump with no issues at all. I watched him done it. No hassle at all, except for the messy sealant, but that is a minor.

The green rim strip is not rim tape. To convert your wheels you need to remove the rim strip and then tape it up with proper rim tape.

If you're getting the "inner tube" type, then you can get away with just insulation tape.

You're going to get very frustrated your first time, so go for it if you have time to fail. If not, get someone else to do it.

I personally do one layer of insulation tape, then one layer of proper rim tape then sealant.

You'll also need a floor pump or compressor. On the bike keep a bomb and bomb valve and tyre plugs.

You get Gorilla tape at builders warehouse, mica or any good hardware store. Ask for the 1" travel roll,it is the correct width.

Good luck with those icons . Last time I tried to fit an icon I got frustrated and threw it away !! It was very loose on the rim and could not inflate it . Popped on an onza canis, 10 min later was ready to ride !

Hi guys, just a quick tip if you really low on cash cut a 26 inch tube in half stick the valve through the valve hole stretch the tube around the 29er rim smack some sealant in one bomb and bobs your uncle ????
