Hi guys

I am back with another newbie question :-)

I just bought my first MTB, but it came with cleat only pedals.

I will be using this bike to ride around the street with my boys, so I need pedals that can be used with cleats (in future) and ready for quick ride down the road when I am just playing around with my boys.

What are my options?

I have heard that those dual pedals with a cleat on one side and the platform on the other is a pain on the trails when clicking in\out while riding, and they pick up a lot of mud.

I am happy to buy second hand from the Hub, but I don't even know what exactly I am looking for :-)

Look forward to hearing from you guys.

Bud I might have a solution for you re the cleats.

A while ago the cheaper spd pedals came out with a plastic platform you just press in. I think I still have them at home in my junk box.

I'll check and pm you tonight.

Now that I think about it, is it wortwhile to try and do this?

Or should I get some mtb shoes and just accept that I need to put them on when I am riding with the kids?

Dude...get rid of the SPD pedals and go anywhere selling Giant stuff and buy their metal platform pedals with the protruding pins.

You can then use any shoes you already own. SPD's are lame IMHO anyway. Especially for beginners wanting to actually learn to correctly ride a bike

JUst because the bike is equipped with cleat pedals doesn't mean you have to embrace it. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

Besides, Learning to ride clipped in is not something you want to try while having to keep an eye on your kids. Do this on your own.

Thanks, guys.

This is my first mtb in about 15 years, so I am brand spanking new to the sport.

Perhaps I should just put flat pedals on since I don't own cleats anyway?

Spare the expense of buying cleats, and just keep the flat pedals until I am ready to go for the cleats.

Just keep the flats and don't waste your time going to clipping in... IMHO anyway...I passed many a clipped in person on Wines2Whales while riding flats ... And had more fun on the technical (if you can call W2W technical at all) stuff ;)
