I called the organizer this morning to ask exactly that. And was told it's normally an no wetsuit event. So I still not know what to do.

Not sure what the x-terra laws are, but if it says no wetsuit then even neoprene shorts are 'illegal'....

It's only 1.8km. Just dig a little deeper in the 1st 200m and get some clean water.

So will a Tri suit or Tri shorts be allowed. Will be my first one. That explains the newbie Q's

Has been no wetsuit last year. Water to warm. Hoping for cold water. That extra help from suit is very nice.

In any case my worry is the effen run. Be prepared to die in the heat. The 12 km feels like a marathon

Whether it is a wetsuit swim r not will depend on the water temperature and the discretion of the race referee. This will be determined on the morning of the race.

If you have a wetsuit, take it with. But rather be prepared to swim without one that expecting to be able to do so. Unless you are older than 75 years in which case it is always allowed.

Why do organizer put a temperature limit in?

Why can't you just use a wetsuit if you want?

International Triathlon Regulations.

"Age group athletes will be allowed to wear wetsuits in water temperatures up to and including 76.1F/24.5C"

I've done a couple of Buffelspoort XTERRAs and only once was it a wetsuit optional race.  So be prepared to go without.

@JHB: Tri suits or shorts are allowed and are preferable.  A good suit/short+shirt combo will make the race much more enjoyable...

Tri suit and short allowed in the swim yes. The minimum tri-specific equipment you will have to invest in is the tri-short.

As for the wetsuit: chances are very small that the event will be wetsuit-compulsory. Even if it's a wetsuit-allowed event, the water can still be relatively warm. You won't be chasing podium so the reulduced buoyancy won't be an issue.
