Raleigh bashing

Recommended Posts

Raleigh has been making basic bikes for years but only got into racing bikes (road and mountainbike - as opposed to commuting bikes) recently.

People still associate the name Raleigh with cheap bikes you buy at Shoprite.

Wasn't it Raleigh that, when they first started making actual road bikes, didn't have a top of the range frame for the team they were sponsoring so they put Raleigh stickers on Schwinns?

Was a couple of years ago.  Help me out here.

People' date=' people.... It depends on what you can afford...

If you can afford to pay for an imported ride (bicycle or car) that cost more but with lower spec than the local stuff, then do it. Cheaper is not always k@k, but I'll wait before buying something from Chin@.....

It's much more fun to go past an expensive bike on a Raleigh cos you're a better rider.

Even better when you do it on a "Makro Special" Dunlop MTB costing R449! LOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOL

problem with raleigh is that you can get it anywhere....even p'np......or you used to be able to.  I think that they should maybe rebrand their top end bikes and keep the cheapies seperate.  I have had two but must say that my Scott is still best.

There is nothing wrong with a Raleigh. If they were so bad, how did Fullard, Lange and Mcleod win the SAs in 2006, 2007 and 2008? Not to mention Taylor in the ladies catagory. If they are good enough for them, they must be good enough for us.

Their colour schemes are pretty boring (except the new Yellow/blue one) though. They sold purely on the basis of good value for money. You got a lot of bike for the price you paid.

However, their 50% price increase in 2008 over some of their range has killed all that and the "value for money" reputation has gone to Silverback.

Except for 1 or 2 LTD Raleighs, I have not seen a single 2008 model on the roads in PE.

I would buy a Raleigh if they weren't so expensive and looked a little less BMCish.

Maybe because Fullard, Lange, Mcleod, Taylor et al would win if they were on almost any half decent bike anyway perhaps ...........

Oh afterthought perhaps but is it 'not about the bike' .......

OMG... Are you suggesting that it is not about the bike?

Any "top end" cyclist will surely know that he cannot buy a "top end" Raleigh at Pick and Pay or Makro. It is only the suurtiete who use that in their postings to try and make Raleigh look bad. They rarely succeed.
