Right, so its time for update the lingo dictionary

Some time ago, I saw a very nice road bicycle with flat bars. Thanks Tubehunter, it still looks awesome!

So the Mrs does not feel confortable with road handlebars on her road bike. I mentioned to her the flat bar thingy idea.

However, what would you call the break ( :) ) lever thingies that would work with non disc breaks ? You know those items that work with a cable and use rubber brake pads? Where to buy them ?

Also what terminology would be required to search for gear shifters?

We can leave the wheel, rim, spoke, hub, tyre discussion for page 3. and derailleur parts for page 5.

AH HA !

And here I thought I would be schooled in the jargon pertaining to mountain biking, after reading the title.

Like when do I say 'bro' (a lot, I know, but still...), or use the words 'rad', 'sick', 'session', and all the other cool words.

V-BRAKE levers?

like this?

Cable brake levers come in 2 basic varieties with the main difference being on how much cable is pulled for a certain amount of lever movement. V-Brake and cable disk brake levers are long pull, i.e. they move more cable when you pull the brake lever but apply less force. They will not work for road brakes, i.e. "those items that work with a cable and use rubber brake pads" to quote Slowbee.

Older cantilever brake levers (From back in the day) and dedicated short pull levers move less cable but apply more force. The cam profile for long pull levers are wrong if you use it on a short pull brakes, i.e. you move a lot of cable but cannot apply enough force to get any decent stopping power because the mechanical advantage is much less than for the correct short pull levers.

Edit:

Here is a link that explains it a bit better http://hub.chainreactioncycles.com/buying-guides/components/brake-levers-buying-guide/

no man this is like radly coolness, umm cantilever is what ? are they the ones with the cable in the middle and then the other type is side pull with cable on the side ?

EDIT: cam profile for long pullers ? that sounds like something oom gert uses to pull the blou draad straight and stiff on his farm...... fence.

Slowbee, are you still lost between long pullers, short pullers, Oom Gert's farm fence and making sure your wife can actually stop?

Sick dude, like not rad (think that is the correct term)

Between you and me I still don't know the difference.

They both use rubber stamp blokkies so no need for further clarification in my book.

Here's hoping this post makes it to page 2. I have all my own jargon lined up.

OK, so this weekend I tried to sort out the brakes for the raleigh. Standard shimano thingies.

There is a lever thing on the side of each brake that seems to loosen or tighten the cable. Might have something to with opening the brake up so you can get the wheel off.

What is the lever thingy called?
