XC Racers - 2x Gear Ratios

Is 40/28 front chain rings paired with 11/34 cassette in the back workable on a XC race bike or too tall?

You need to provide more info. What is the wheel size? Rider age and weight?

40/28 x 11/34 is not current anymore especially on today's more technical 29 /27.5 favored courses...

11/34 was a 26 er ratio...

Go 38/26 x 11/36 if you have the option..

For XCO you will hardly need the 11, unless you are running a 1 x 10 system..

For example, my 16 year old son is using a 1 x 10 system with a 32 blade up front and 11/40 on the cassette on a 29er bike.

I would not advocate 1x systems for any rider under 15 years old, but that is just me. In that case the ratio that ChunkyMonkey mentioned would be fine.

The bike in question is a 29" S-Works Stumpjumper hardtail that I am busy building. I have a crank and cassette in that configuration so was wondering if it will work. Not sure about rider spec as I am building the bike as a project that will be sold.

I've read somewhere that Shimano's 2x front derailleurs cannot handle more than 10 teeth difference, i.e therefore the new XT comes in 34/24, 36/26 and 38/28. If you want to have a bigger gap, a 3x front derailleur may work.

Good info, I have a 3x front mech if needed.

I wouldn't go for 3x. In XCO you need as little as possible technical complication. There is not much time available to recover from severe technical issues.

Go for 36/26 upfront if you want 2x.

What Moridin said.

I'd seriously consider 1x over 2x but with an 11-46 sunrace cassette instead of an XT. Better gear spacing between the larger cogs.

If you want 2x go for the spec used in all mountain bikes (24/36 I think - think it's called AG or AK) for a wider range and paired with an 11-36 cassette)

Obviously needs the same spec front derailleur, but that's what I'd recommend to hit the vast majority of disciplines.

Your existing chainring sizing favours XCM almost exclusively.

The bike will mainly be used for XC. Want to see if it will be usable and sellable with this configuration before I go and buy some more stuff

XCO or XCM.

IMO the suggestions above are largely applicable to both, but your original orientation is not.

Figured XCM but with the opinions expressed I think I need a 11/36 and then will check if I can change chain rings up front.

You'll be able to change rings no Problem. The crank has a standard bolt circle diameter so it won't be a problem to change them out for something different.

Yeah just did not want to have the extra expense if I could avoid it, XTR crank.
