Shimano Ultegra 6800 Chain Rring Durability

I recently took my bike into my LBS for a service. I knew it needed a new chain, as I was getting some not-so-precise gear changing at the back. But they I have now informed me that after putting the new chain on, it slipping at the front end and have recommended that I replace my chain ring. This is only the second chain to go on this Shimano Ultegra 6800 11-Speed drive train, which is less than two years old.

I do not put in huge distance and in all my years of owning bikes I have never replaced a chain ring (and I owned my previous bike for six years).

Is this kind of wear normal on a Shimano Ultegra 6800 11-speed chain ring?

What sort of distance have you done?  If you replace your chain more than once every 9000 km then you should get at least 30000 km on your front chainrings, assuming reasonable lubrication and care).

Are you sure it's the front and not the back that's slipping?  I've never had slipping on the front - clicking noises yes, but no slipping.

The big ring or little ring?

Strange, mine lasted for ages... 35000km

Even on my race tandem I get more mileage than that. I also have 6800 11s ultegra on my single and rotate between 2 chains and clusters and there is no ways the blades are worn enough to warrant replacement.

I have only ever changed blades once on my tandem and that was because he 54 was way too small.

I reckon your LBS is either trying to pull a fast one or they not so clued up on their job.

I once had an LBS suggest I convert my braze on front derailleur for a clamp on - by building it up with carbon, reason being they couldn't get the front gears to set because of front derailleur flex. Turns out they had a 10speed chain on an 11 speed! Sometimes LBS's reach, get a 2nd opinion.

Big chain rings wear on a teutonic time scale. Only time I ever had to replace one was when I chipped one of the teeth riding off a kerb.....

Within a few months after replacing it my (then trusted) LBS suggested I replace the chain ring because it was worn ... They chain yeah, the rear cluster maybe , but NOT a big chain ring with < 900km!

Second opinion required! (whether permanent or temporary is your choice)
