Hubland.

I have had a bone spur removed 3 weeks ago and to do this thoroughly the Dr had to loosen my achilles and reattach it after. My question is is there guys who had this done or know of someone. After how long can i get back on the bike. I know running is a good 6 to 8 months away. Cast is coming off in 3 weeks time then its a moon boot for 4 weeks after that.

The blues is a real thing here.......

Sorry for the ordeal you have gone through, and sorry I am not posting to answer your question.

I am just interested to know what you were feeling, ie. What were the symptoms of the bone spur, how long it took you to get a diagnosis, how hectic the op and recovery was, and how your'e feeling now.

I wish you a full and a speedy recovery..

Thanx Harryn

The spur is very visible at the back, also known as Haglunds deformity. The problem is the Achilles gets squashed litterally between the spur and the shoe, and that is very very sore. You cant wear shoes without pain, and running is pretty much impossible. The diagnosis was confirmed with a Xray. The opp is 90 mins long, and the dr put in a drain over night whichh helped a lot as 100ml was drained overnight....... Its not that sore as they gave me a pain block. # weeks after the opp i am okay, painless taking antii inflammatory for weeks. The biggest thing for me is the cast for 6 weeks. It sucks walking on crutches and not having hands to work with while walking.

I have not had a similar operation, but 2 x back surgery. The question I asked myself as recovery started was:

  1. Am I a pro rider (ie income depends on cycling/sport)
  2. How well do I want to recover

My answers for 1) No, and 2) as good as possible.

I thus took six months after the first op and 8 months after the second. Although I missed riding and hated getting unfit, I am glad I took the time to recover properly.

Feel your pain Varkie - brain that are used to all those endorphines and natural opiates get the blues bad when deprived. Also hard not to be able to move freely.

Good healing to you! I shouldn't think it will be too long - cycling is good for Achilles rehab I seem to remember hearing.
