What about changing your 44 to a 39?

Well my toppie just tells me we must just get stronger  .

The problem with putting a 39 on is the jump up to the 56 is big and the derailleur struggles. We chucked the 39 before even riding together and put on a 42/55 but when we put the 56 on even then we found the changes to be a grind.

An aside: a granny gear? A 3rd chainwheel, or a cassette sprocket?

Yeah a 3rd much smaller blade on the crank. Most tandems have a triple crankset. We chucked the small one to save weight long as we never used it, most local joburg races you don't even get out the big blade on the tandem. Our crank crank is still able to take a small gear but we just don't have it. Hope that makes sense?

So not being from PTA and I don't know if I have ridden these roads before, What are we in for? Have been really considering new gearing after reading all these messages. Am currently running 44/56 blades up front and a 28/11 cluster. On hekpoort we could have done with a slightly easier gear, we coped but just lost the break we were with and had to chase like mad to catch on the decent. While our tandem is currently set up with 2 blades up front we do have the option to add a "granny gear". Am considering looking for the biggest granny gear we can fit and then putting a 23/11 cluster as it seems we can't get a shimano cluster that has bigger than a 28 and still has an 11 at the bottom. If I can get a 36 or 38 granny gear I think it will be ok.

I have no experience on tandems so is propably not the best person to give advice.  But with Voortrekker and Tom Jenkins they start off with a kick and then ease out and is not so bad towards the second half.  Voortrekker is about 800-900 meters in length if I remember correctly and Tom Jenkins might be shorter.  I think prep yourself for a nasty little crunch in the beginning of the climbs but by the time you get your rythm you should be fine.

It's STEEP believe me! Fortunately not very long. The worst bit is the first third maybe. We did a "test" on the tandem and with fairly fresh legs it was hard - down to 9km/h at one point. We run 52/39 up front and an 11/32 cassette, we used the 39/32.

See you on the line........

Awesome thanks. See you there. What kit/bike must I look for? Orange burley for me. Not sure what I we will wear yet.

Matrix - Tank, we're in TBC (Bestmed) kit. We were 3rd (2nd) mixed at Carnival.

LOL but different categories. FlashJordan is mixed and we mens. But it would be good to stay with them as they finished 3 min ahead of us at carnival so in a way it will be a good target.

Faster AND mixed. Always worth trying to hang on..... :whistling:
