I am looking to get the Garmin 935, clevertrainaing.com is selling them.

Are there any duties to bring this into SA, is VAT added at 14% or at a higher rate?

Imports - Dollar/EURO/YEN whatever * ROE * 1.14 * 1.1 * duty of item.

 

In the case of electronics, I stand to be corrected, but it's might be zero, hence duty on item = 1.00.

Duty has nothing to do with 1.1 and 1.14... that's the VAT side of things.

 

Duties is calculated on the FOB value on the date of shipment. For Sports Fitness Equipment, i.e. Garmin, it's 0% duty.

 

 

How is VAT calculated on imported goods?

 

The VAT rate in South Africa is currently 14%

To calculate VAT on imported goods, the ATV (added tax value) needs to be determined first.

 

This is done as follows:

 

[(Customs Value + 10% thereof) + (any non-rebated duties levied on the goods)] x 14%

= [ATV] x 14%

= VAT payable

Thanks would the below calculation be correct.

$499 X R12.92 = R6448

R6448 * 10% = R7092

R7092 * 14% = R8085

Then, you also need to pay the disbursements (R150 for DHL or R50 for the SAPO).

 

Your "landed cost" is therefore the ($499 less 10%) * ROE + [ATV]*1.14 + Disbursements + ($39.99/$49.99 * ROE).

Check the price locally, for a Garmin that is available here before you buy from the USA. It may be better to wait for the 935 to be launched here first and then decide. #justsaying
