Downhill bike for 11 year old

Hi there,

My son's latest obsession is biking.  He likes to wheelie, ramp and whip etc.  He wants a downhill for the few times we go to the bike park and then they have little trails here in our estate forest.

His dream bike is a Santa Cruz but that is very pricey, and he's not pro!

What other options are there?  And what size would you recommend for him?

He currently has a Titan MTB 24" but reckon he should go a size up with next bike.

Thank you.

Thank you so much!  Will start hunting.  24" looks good but I think he's already going to be too big for it...

Another q

How does one get into the sport?  Where does he start?

well find shuttle days near you and get to know everyone, next year you can start on the races,As you go to more events and just ride the trails you will get into it and know how everything works.if hes over 1.55m then go for a small 26er dh bike, and he'll grow into it.

last year i got my first dh bike being to short and grew into quickly and outgrew it too

Hey CharG

As Mongooser said the best is to get into some shuttle days and get to know the other riders.

Gauteng, WP and KZN all have race series that have age categories for your lighty.

Let us know where you are based and we can get you in touch with the respective commissions.

As for the bike in the image above that is a Santa Cruz. It is a Santa Cruz Bullit.

However I would not go for that as it is really old and doesnot have the best geometry for todays tracks etc.

As Mongooser has said - look at a Mongoose Bootr to start with - they are very well priced second hand and are great as a starter bike.

Giant CT have a 26er 2015 (I Think) glory in Small for 20k. I think that's a LOT of money to spend on an 11 year old but it's a great bike and when he outgrows it you can buy him a new frame, swap all the parts across and hang that one on his wall.

At the recent new DH track next to Haka there was a young kid on a very small full suss bike.

Think it was 20" or something. The Morewood Izimu is a bullet proof bike but might be too long and heavy for a short small person.
