My kids are ready to get a pedal bike after getting to hot to handle good on those plastic bikes.

What's the best bike for kids learning to pedal a bike, entry bike after they have mastered the plastic and 2 wheel push bikes. Looking for suggestions on where to get the most cost effective scaleable lightweight (not heavy) pedal bike with brake levers for kids aged between 3-5 to learn to pedal and ride.

Where can I buy these in cape town, second hand or new but not junk you buy in mass sales retail stores with barbie stickers etc.

Thanks a mill.

difficult age/size ....

probably 16'' bikes.  Hardly popular at the bike shops ....

the 5 year old might be getting closer to the 20'' size - depending on the length of the kid.

Our first 20'' "had to be" a Makro model - only model with a straight line from the steering to the back-wheel, resulting in the lowest seat position.

The second 20'' is a Momsen, certainly better build than the rest of the 20'' models I could find in the shops.  Got it at Cycle4Life in Paarl.

But please dont let them ride with training wheels .... what a struggle to wheen them of this !!

So where to buy ?

- Makro (never thought I would say that ! )

- CWC has had decent stock of kid bikes, and when we were in the market nothing ...

- Gecko Cycles have had a few nice models as well

- Tygerberg Cycles (Specialized)

- my first choice - Cycle4Life

Be prepared to go though quite a number of bikes as they grow but dont be tempted to buy a size up as it can make it difficult for them.

Enjoy the special times as they start to ride with you.

We ended up buying one from Checkers. Ja ja I know "Mass market store" rubbish blah blah blah, but after looking around at our local bike shops, I wasn't prepared to drop huge amounts of cash on a "mini race machine" This was to be used along the beachfront promenade and to blast around the garden at home. It even handled a good many laps around the Giba BMX track. Price tag came in at under R1k with all metal components and it wasn't too heavy. Wheel size was 10" so fitted my some perfectly at the time (He was 4). We went from that onto a 16" Raleigh MTB hand me down from his brother. He is currently on a 20" Titan and loving it.

He rides with me at Giba on the trails at the moment and is loving it. None of these bikes are race snake material and would be shunned by the weight weenies but he's never complained about the weight

I my daughter is still on 12" bike for a year now. She is 5. She had a weeride kick bike first. I got the 12" at tge flee market and it has lasted a year. Paid 400 for it. Agree with red robin. Get the correct size cor the age. There is a website that tells you what size to get according to their length. I wouldn't spend to much until they are atleast 7. Since they outgrow them quickly and they dobt do enough distance to wear out a cheap bike.

He now use this to play around at his parents home.  Got him a Momsen for the trails.
