My bikes are insured with Santam. It is specified as part of my home content, but because it is specified, it is covered in any situation. If I break a wheel, I can claim, if they disappear from the rack, I can claim etc.

Slightly off topic but here goes (feel free to point me in the right direction)

So I bought my bike secondhand and would like to think its a good bike.

105 shimano, giant carbon frame etc.

I was told that I should add a value in the 18 to 20k insurance mark, as to replace for a similar spec brand new would be in that range.

Questions are:

1) Which providers are the best?

2) Is it not covered under household items?

Giant carbon road bikes start around the R30k mark and rapidly go up from there. So I'd recommend getting it valuated correctly, otherwise you're going to be in for a nasty surprise if it ever comes time to claim and you're under insured. You typically need to insure your bike at the current year model replacement, if you paid R10k for a 2010 model, but it's equivalent 2018 model is R50k, it needs to be insured for R50k.

It will be covered under household only when the bike is in your house. If you're out riding, it's no longer covered. Some insurance providers explicitly exclude bicycles from being insured under household contents. Get your policy wording and read the fine print. Most people have their bikes insured under all-risks for these reasons.

As for which provider is the best, you'll find a number of long-running threads if you do a quick search.

There will always be differing opinions on most insurers.

I'm with Momentum, with 3 bikes plus kit as specified items (not under my household insurance) with all risk.

I've definitely gotten cheaper quotes, but when I have needed to claim I've never had an issue.

The longest time they took to approve a claim for a full road bike after I was hit by a car was a day, and I had the money 2 days after that.

Hi Everyone,

I am coming in on the end of this conversation but thought I would post up my story and how I have progressed into this sport.

I decided at the beginning of the year to stop being a fat and lazy F*%$ that I have been for a long time after the scale decided to tilt at 134 Ks, so off to the gym I went and my daughter got me onto a spinning bike.

I also went on a self imposed diet and limit my intake of alcohol.

So far I have lost 25 Kgs and am feeling soooo much better, so much so that my daughter then challenged me to do the 94.7, so I went off and bought a road bike (Scott Speedster S) and started training this week (I know its a bit late) and am doing 18 ks every morning. Out at 5 and

back by 5:50.

I am meeting up with someone from Bike Hub tomorrow to do a 30 K around O.R. Tambo and am looking forward to it.

So far I am very happy with my progress, and will start doing 25 Ks from Monday, and each week look at increasing my distance.

I must say the sport had bit me, and I am looking at progressing much further.

So far I must say the traffic can be a bit scary, but nothing to serious so far, I have lights fitted to the bike so I feel a lot safer. The only problem I have is I am riding alone, but I think I ould well look at joining a group, but not everyone rids every day, and I want too.

Anyway, I find this site a great inspiration and full of good advice and hope to meet some of you in the future.

Go well.

Well done and keep the momentum.  There is a old/ex hubber many years ago who was voluntering on the 94.7 waterpoints one year.  He was also unfit and overweight.  He looked at everybody on their bicycles and decided that this looks actually nice.  He wants to try it.  A year later he was racing bloody well in the licenced bunch.  Enjoy.

Congrats.  So how do you feel?  It only gets faster from now on ;)

I feel great, and know that it was an excellent achievement.

Every Single muscle in my body is sore (including those that I never even knew existed).

Overall, the race was tough, with lots and lots of climbing, endless cramping and terrible heat.. but was all worth it when I received my medal.

I will train and come back a much faster rider next year
