Im keen to buy a second set of 29'r wheels ( second hand ) and put road slicks on for training  . Are all the discs /rotors compatible with other makes of calipers . Are there any that dont match .

Had a wee problem with this. I had to replace my avid rotors a while ago on and replaced with Shimano. I encountered an issue where the brake pads kept rubbing on the rotor and it was not a positioning issue from the calliper, as both sides rubbed continuously.

So took a micrometer to it and noticed a that the Shimano's were slightly wider than the avid`s. To fix it I sanded down the pads a bit to create space and secondly after a while of riding it appears that the rotors lost a bit of width but seem to have settled since then. Have replaced brake pads since the issue and all is fine now.

Think the issue can be seen when looking at the rotor itself as I have a spare new one at home and on the braking edge it doesn`t look flat, almost looks like there is some sort of coating on it. As it is matt`ish in colour new where it gets the silver glossy look after rinding a while.

Some new rotors for cars and bikes have a film /coating on to prevent rust while in storage
