Eddy Merckx got kidney punched back when he was trying to go for his sixth TdF win. It happened fairly late into the race. Last week of the race iirc. Thevenet ended up the victor as Merckx couldn't recover well enough from the after effects of the punch. So ASO knows what could happen. They are essentially choosing to turn a blind eye as they seem to be of the belief that this sort of incident is the exception and not the rule.

Besides closing the climb off to the public I am not sure they can police every fan on that mountain..maybe close if off and sell tickets to 100 people and only have those on the mtn?

Honestly not too sure? Maybe a whole bunch of plain clothes police officers with the understanding that they are to arrest anyone who interferes with or attacks the riders? As I can't see barricades being an option or closing the road off to the public for that matter.

I'd like to think that most guys will get out the way before they become a problem but most have been boozing since the night before so no guarantees on that. My concern is that with Sky being as dominant as they are is that it'll take one guy who's pissed out his brackets to have a go at either GT or CF and sends them to hospital in a bad way. And what then? Rather some sort of proactive action needs to take place and the best solution, in my mind at least, is plain clothes police officers.

There were more cops today on the mtn than i have ever seen before.. thing is they can only react to incidents.. like with the guy who had a go at Froome..they can't predict who will do what..

Veulta sometimes line the whole climb with cops they become a human barrier and people still get in the way and cause trouble.

Maybe make it a booze free zone?

So easy to swap out a bottle water for a bottle vodka. I know because I have seen guys get away with stuff just like that. But I suppose that it would help to make it a booze free zone.

I think it was in the Vuelta that a cop had a very decent tackle on a crazy fan. Maybe nice option for rugby players as reservist type “tacklists”?

I did see one fan get grabbed around the neck and swung to the ground by a policeman.

They don't tolerate nonsense much here but as has been mentioned, they can only really react after the incident. Even if it's seconds after the incident it could be too late.

My grandmother has a better left hook than that

Not sure what he wanted to do, ended up half pushing him but with not much effect.
