Tyre sealant top-up

Top of the morning to you all.

I have been reading about topping up on tyre sealant in some posts. Some say every 3 months, some say as needed.

I started putting in my own sealant (stans) and need to know when do I need to "top-up". What do I need to look out for.

Much appreciated.

Cheers

How do you top up? Through the valve or by breaking the seal?

Personally I just "eye" the sealant level when I open up one side of the tyre, once every few months (3/4 months) depending on how much I ride. If it looks low I'll add, if there is a significant amount of debris I'll take out all the sealant and add fresh sealant, if there are only a few "slime balls" I'll just take them out and top up.

Good morning:-)

I give my wheel ( while off the bike ) a good shake, if I hear a little slushing around, them I'm still good, no slush, I top up...

Have a fab day

Through the valve.

When you say top up, how much do you top up with?

I cleaned my tyre and rim before putting in the new sealant. Saw about two teaspoons of sealant in the one rim. The other was about the same.

Cheers. Top up with how much? 60ml, 100ml, 125ml?

That is my concern, not sure as to the amount to use if I do not hear the "slushing".

I did a check in last week with my wheels, cleaned out the 'old' debris left behind. I then topped up with about 120ml of Tyre Juice in each tyre.

I found the stans was not runny anymore. so just added the Tyre Juice.

I add some in when I can't hear it sloshing about anymore. Once a week I clean and lube chain etc so this is how frequently its checked.

I remove the valve core. measure out my Joes into the little cup and use a syringe to squirt it down the valve . Wipe off any mess. Replace core. Pump up and off you go!

I use about 80ml

Hi Rick

Thanks.

I bought that Titan for my little girl. Need to do the tubeless thing this weekend so we are ready for the Nissan trailseaker 10km in Nov. Will be our first ride together.

I work on guesstimate alone!! I have an idea of how much sealant was in there to start off with, and just top it up to roughly the same level as I remember.  Problem with always topping up with lets say 50ml every time you might end up with massive amounts (or too little) sealant in the tyre.

PS. I don't wash out the tyre and only clean the rim when I redo the rim tape and valve. I found by washing the tyre you open many new holes causing a bunch of the sealant to waste sealing old holes.

Disclaimer: I'm not sure whether this is bad practice or not but it works for me.

Do you need to replace/redo the rim tape as well after a period?

Not a set period, more like when needed for example when the spokes get replaced or the tape start coming loose. I also replace the tape when I replace the valve if it gets damaged for some reason.

I dont replace tape unless it gets damaged, you would know if is, as your sealant would come leaking out where the spokes or valve are, or your constantly loosing air pressure through the spoke or valve hole.I would consider changing the tape after a few tyre changes but not really necessary. When topping up, I go through the valve hole with a syringe, this way i keep an all ready perfectly sealed tyre on the rim. The amount vary's depending on size of tyre, on my 29' i put about 60ml/90ml.... doesn't need to be exact.

Hope this helps you :-)

Thanks T-Bag. Helps me a lot.

Just a warning - if you don't take the tyre off and check every now and then you're going to get a giant alien booger.

Found some pretty spectacular specimens over the years.
