Foam bar tape

Hi All

Just a question.

Would foam tape, the self adhesive type, work as cushioning under normal handle bar tape?

I have always used double wrappings of tape on my bars and thought of trying this.

Would this be feasible and would there be any draw backs? Why not?

Only concern is, under a normal tape wrap, it's likely to compress and you'll lose both tension in the bar tape, and any compression benefit.

I would stick with double wrapping. I only buy one set of tape when I need to freshen it up, and use the old top layer as the new bottom layer. This is, of course, if your goal is to save some cash, which I'm assuming is the goal?

Yes, I am concerned with the tension and the bar tape coming loose due to the change in form of the base foam layer.

Corrugation comfort is what I was attempting to achieve.

Appreciate your input, thanks.

When fiddling with brake lever position, I used an old inner tube as a quick-fix on my CX bike. When I get round to proper bar tape, I was wondering whether I could keep the inner tube as the first layer and wrap 'proper' tape on top. Anyone tried this? Anything to watch out for?

I thought of this and decided against it because the tube is not tight, it will move about creating even more problems as mentioned above?

This is why I prefered the stuck on foam tape without overlaps.  Too thick may be a problem?

I have big hands and so the added padding will be a bonus?

Still working on this.  Cheap enough to try?

Must say, my inner tube is wrapped pretty firmly, so movement shouldn't be too big a problem. I'm worried more about the ridges caused by the edges of the tube and whether a top layer of tape would seat properly.

I'm a terrible bar-wrapper - always have been - so would need to get my LBS to do it for me, and the last time I asked if they could double-wrap bar tape, they looked at me strangely.....sadly.

What's wrong with double wrapping? Why are you thinking of trying out something different?

I have some of this - https://ritcheylogic.com/wcs-pave-tape on my cotic - double layered on top - works very well and I am super happy with it. I have never seen it on sale locally - not that I have searched for it.

Got it from bike24 - if you do order some, order me a spare set - need to retape one of my other road bikes :)

Always think about what I am doing and also think about how stuff works.  Always thinking there could perhaps/maybe be a better/newer way which would result in the reason why things become different.  A lot of thinking......

Did 600 lonely kms on gravel roads with corrugations (I don't use suspension forks) and this in itself makes you think about "trying out something different."  Give it a try?

Fizik do a gel insert that goes under the tape. It's reusable as well, so though it is a bit pricey you only have to buy it once.
