Tacx Flux - what derailer setup to choose

Have my flux and want to start getting the most out of it.. However I only have MTB's at home and no short cage derailer anywhere.. What would be the most cost effective solution you guys have come up with? I realise I can probably run a normal cassette and probably go to say the 5th sprocket on the cassette. But it isnt ideal... I assume 1x10 with a short cage is the way to go? Or maybe a 9speed setup with MTB shifters and Road derailer at the back?

I've seen some people that have modified the base to allow the longer RD - maybe something to look into?  The base is a simple piece so shouldn't be too hard to do.  And cheaper than trying to change RD's on your bike.

I have also given that some thought. Not sure I want to mod the base, warantee issues and all, but probably be able to build a new one that is vertical on the drive side? Any pics of someone that has done this?
