How to remove anodyzing

Recently I serviced my drive train and for good measure I put the crankset in the dishwasher. From previous experience I found the dishwasher removes some of the anodyzing but not all of it.

So is there anything I can use to completely clean off the anodyzing and make my crank look nice and shiny?

Oven cleaner, and then polish; or hand sanding and then polishing it.

Clearcoat is optional, but I think the dishwasher might eat at it. I've been running my cranks just polished without anything for several months without problems, but it gets dirty quick, and dullish after 3-4 months, so that meant repolishing once.

so you have put your crankset in a dishwasher more than once (and accept it damaged the finish the first time but did it again)..............why do you think this is a good idea exactly ?

You actually want the anodising. Its a chemical reaction that hardens and coats the metal a few micrometers deep to prevent oxidation. Its more hardwearing and tougher than most other finishes like powder coat or paint. If you removing anodising you removing material. If you want it off either you get in there with some sandpaper or if you google there it a chemical cocktail you can mix up, take precautions like masks and gloves though.

The dishwasher won't remove the anodising, only the dye that it gets soaked in afterwards. Looks the part, but doesn't affect the surface finish.
