Two weeks in and the legs are properly cooked! Next week is going to be a battle of the mind over the body.

Imploder, keep at it. You will find you get used to it very quickly.

I felt the same way when i started. But it is totally worth it.

Where are you on the board?

give it two months and your body would have totally adjusted to the day in day out rides

In two months you feel properly annoyed when you don't get to ride.

Just remember not to TT everyday.  You might have to reduce tempo and take a easier ride just that your body can recover.  I personally find that by the third day it is the toughest but after that I am alright.  I find, due to the distance I commute, that by the second day I am so hungry that I contemplate eating my keyboard.  But makings sure you have enough to eat (especially protiens) that also goes away.

Thanks Bats, I thought I was the only one. The hunger is constant.

Look at it this way ...

I am 1,86m tall, weigh in at about 84kg.  Under normal day to day activity, my body burns about 2400 kilo calories per day.

I did not have too much problems commuting in SA as my distances were shorter but when I started commuting the 35 km one way here I very quickly developed a problem.

Everytime I commute, I cycle per day about 2,5 hours which in turn means I burn just in those 2,5 hours anything between 2000 and 2200 kilo calories extra, over and above my normal burn rate.  You need to put a large part of that back into you body.  Otherwise come day 3 you WILL realise you have a problem.

It might be a good idea to use a Calorie counting app like FatSecret or even Garmin Connect might have something just to track you daily activity and what you eat so that you get an idea of what you take in and what you spend.  It helps you get a better idea of what to eat under what conditions.  You don'T have to constantly use the app. The moment you formed the habit you continue as per normal.

two months is usually the mark where one sees new commuters to our group stepping up to the plate and wanting to ride into the wind, or initiating the race to the next stop moves.

So after taking your advice and making yesterday a SUPER slow riding day. The legs and body feel much better today. As bonus I got to ogle at some of the impressive mansions in Saxonwold, some people have some really nice houses.

Note to self:

  • Recovery is key

You joke, but you if you've seen that new Nando's ad (South Africans can fix their Sh#t). There's that scene where the two brothers are loading there SUV with bags of cash and that huge portrait. I saw something similar, where they had an SUV parked outside one of the brothers/family member sitting in the back, security all around and they were loading stuff in the back.

Was a really surreal moment, especially after having recently seen the Nando's ad.
