Shimano Rear deraileur P tension spring

Hi Hubbers

Anyone replaced the P tension spring in Shimano rear derailleur and where can I find one in Cape Town area ?

Chain flopping around with minimal tension.  Have maxed tension screw adjustment and ensured chain is not to long.

Have stripped mine down and cleaned out a lot of "gunck" but still not working as is should.

Results in some chain slip in small rings.

LBS either look at me strangely or don't have stock and doubt whether they will ever get.

Shimano spares seem to be a problem.

Any advice will be appreciated.

You will have to use parts from a 2nd derailleur as Shimano don't supply.

First make sure that the derailleur is attached to the hanger correctly. On some models you can mount it on the hanger with the "stop" pin on the wrong side of the cut out on the hanger, which will give the symptoms you describe.

If the spring is broken you can find all the info here:-

The spring shouldn't lose tension. If it's all cleaned up, the spring is installed correctly and wasn't damaged during removal, then the next guess would be that the clutch is causing the stiction. Does your derailleur have a clutch?
