Good day.

I am a first time MTB buyer. I want to start the sport and need some advice on buying my first bike. I am currently looking at two bikes that falls into my price budget. 1) Silverback Stride 29 HD 2) Momsen RX 290.

Will aprreciate all inputs and advice. Thank you

Try to get at least a 2x10 drive train. 11-36 cassette at least (36-22or24 in front)

Those bikes you chose are 7 and 8 speed cassette.

The Silverback is 8 speed 11-32  42 34 24 which is better than the Momsen for climbing.

The Momsen is only 7 Speed 14-28  42 34 24

You need a good climbing bike for riding mountain bike tracks with fairly steep or semi-steep hills.

They both have 100 mm Zoom Forks which are Low End but should get you around the track.

What is your budget in Rands. ?

My budget is nothing more than R5500

What size are you and where are you based? Personally I would look at second hand. The ones below could be a possibility depending on your size and location?:

I would not waste my money on a new 7/8 speed bike. I bought the Momsen AL129 9 speed for R7500 last year and its not been a bad ride at all...

Within 3 months the bike will no longer be good enough for you and you will upgrade to a better bike by hook or by crook and in so doing waste the money or most of the money on your first purchase... its human nature and just how it is.

Get a better bike min. 10 speed by hook or by crook and there is nothing wrong with second hand. ????

Agree with the comments re getting a second hand bike. Also agree with the comments about saving a bit more and trying to go for a 10 spd bike. Both brands mentioned are great and I would advise that you look out for a deal in the classifieds for either of those brands.
