The Tropical Tour in Tzaneen was always very good.  Tough routes.  Propper tour.

But got cancelled due to infighting, politics, theft? etc etc.  Lots of he said, she said that came out after and nothing was ever heard again.

Its called "The Magoeba 3 day MTB" and its August this year. All the details on their facebook page. All in and around Haenertsburg, Magoebaskloof and George's Valley. Different distance options too....pretty sure it will be a tough bugger!!

Cant do it this year cos its so close to Trans but definitely penciled it in for next year!!

Hosting races is expensive, sponsors want value & people are short of cash. I agree that 'back to basics' races/events may be a great option. Simple, no frills etc. Unfortunately timing and medics are expensive but necessary.

I did the Porcupine MTB this past weekend and it was not a glamorous event, the marshaling and signage will need to be improved. Other than that, it was a superb event, the trails were awesome, I didn't stop at the WP, but many okes said it was great. It was completely volunteer run and the funds go for the Lions Club. I'm not interested in all the staging, marketing stuff, they can even keep the medal. The timing was done by some company, but all I see was a woman taking my time down as I crossed the line so can't see this to be an expensive exercise.I mainly enter MTB events so that I can ride uninterrupted and blow my lungs out (and enjoy the beautiful scenery). We need more of these events!

P.s. It was won by Karl Platt, so it even attracts the pros!

The decline in event attendance is due to a number of factors.

1. Economically driven decisions. Events have become expensive. The opportunity cost of entering races needs to be considered to evaluate the value proposition.

2. Quality trails. While this is a positive for the industry as a whole, the races seem to suffer. 10 years ago you could count on your 1 hand the available trails within a 100km radius from Cape Town (my hometown). Now the choice is seemingly endless, so it is a much better value proposition to have a few annual permits and to pay day membership fees for the balance. You can now also visit weekend destinations outside of race weekends, ride much of the race trails and have affordable accommodation. Many seemingly take this option

3. Timing. With Strava races has lost some of their allure as every ride can now turn into a race.

With regards to sponsorship falling away, it tends to happen where the benefits of sponsorship is over-sold. Often sponsors come onboard with high expectations. When this does not translate in sales it leads to sponsors not renewing.

Only a few events have a cult-following. The dynamics of this is hard to lay bare. Take Attakwas for instance: not 1 km of single track, but that black number board of the ratels make me want to do number 5 next year. It does help that we got a good quality T-shirt, biogen goodies that are all very usable and that the organization of the event is brilliant.
